Kuldeep climbs to No. 2 on IPL 2025 Purple Cap table after DC vs RR

How to face Kuldeep Yadav ft. Rayudu

Purple Cap leaderboardNoor Ahmad is at No. 1 – that hasn’t changed in a long time – with 12 wickets, but just one below him, with 11 wickets from six games, is Kuldeep Yadav after he picked up 1 for 33 on Wednesday night. Left-arm wristspin does work, doesn’t it?Two others are also on 11 wickets – Khaleel Ahmed of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Shardul Thakur of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) – but from one extra match. And Khaleel is above Thakur because of a superior economy rate: 9.00 vs 10.96.Wednesday night was all about Mitchell Starc, whose yorker show won DC the match in the Super Over, but amazing as he was, he picked up just one wicket in the game. That put him in the long list of bowlers with ten wickets at this stage: Hardik Pandya of Mumbai Indians (MI), Prasidh Krishna, R Sai Kishore and Mohammed Siraj of Gujarat Titans (GT), and Varun Chakravarthy and Harshit Rana of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson are moving up the Orange Cap table•Getty Images

Orange Cap leaderboardThe top of the Orange Cap table looks exactly like it did on Wednesday morning, with Nicholas Pooran (LSG), B Sai Sudharsan (GT) and Mitchell Marsh (LSG) hogging the top three spots, and Shreyas Iyer (PBKS), Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bengaluru – RCB) and Suryakumar Yadav (MI) just below. But after that, KL Rahul (DC) has moved up to No. 7, after scoring 38 to continue his good run-scoring form. He has 238 runs now. The 51 Yashasvi Jaiswal (RR) scored against DC – his third half-century this season – has put him just after Rahul with 233 runs, and Sanju Samson (RR), who scored 31 before retiring hurt, has 224 runs and is at No. 9.Highest batting strike ratesBest bowling economy ratesMost sixesBest bowling figures in a match

Overton stars as Somerset take control

His 3 for 30 and three fine slip catches helps establish a first-innings lead of 186

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay17-May-2025Craig Overton played the starring role as Somerset moved into a strong position on the second day of the Rothesay County Championship Division One match with Sussex at the Cooper Associates Ground, Taunton.Having extended their first-innings score to 338 all out, with Archie Vaughan last man out for 80 and Nathan McAndrew claiming 4 for 71, the hosts skittled their opponents for 152, Overton claiming 3 for 30 and three fine slip catches to help establish a lead of 186. Daniel Hughes top-scored with 38, while Migael Pretorius took 3 for 24.Sussex were made to follow on and reached 127 for 4 by stumps, with openers Tom Haines and Daniel Hughes out for 50 and 40 respectively. They trailed by 59 runs. The day began with Somerset adding just 21 runs to their overnight score for the loss of four wickets. Three of them fell to McAndrew, who began by having Overton brilliantly caught off an inside edge by wicketkeeper John Simpson for 28.Pretorius edged through to Simpson off Ollie Robinson and it was 333 for 9 when Matt Henry skyed a catch to mid-off, Robinson this time the catcher, to give McAndrew his third wicket of the innings. The fourth ended Vaughan’s career-best knock as he went on the attack and perished to another catch at mid-off. The 19-year-old had faced 134 balls and hit 15 fours to bolster what looked a good total given the nature of the pitch.Sussex made a decent enough start to their reply, Hughes and Haines taking the total to 37 in the tenth over before the latter pushed forward defensively to Overton and nicked a catch to wicketkeeper James Rew.Haines had moved fluently to 24, with 4 fours. But his departure signalled a turning point as the next over saw Tom Clark fall lbw to Henry, who had switched to the River End, and at lunch the scoreboard read 68 for 2.It was 75 for 3 when Tom Alsop edged Pretorius into the bucket hands of Overton at second slip and 80 for four in the following over, Josh Davey this time profiting from Overton’s prowess as a slip fielder to send back James Coles for a duck. With just 17 runs added, Simpson was bowled shouldering arms to Overton, who soon followed up with a similar delivery from around the wicket that brought the demise of Hughes, also playing no shot.Overton claimed his third catch when Fynn Hudson-Prentice edged a back-foot defensive shot off Pretorius before Jack Leach weighed in with the wickets of McAndrew and Robinson, the first spooning a catch to cover and the other attempting to hit a second six, but only edging to Lewis Gregory at slip.Pretorius ended the innings by bowling last man James Hayes and Sussex had been shot out in 46.2 overs. Expecting the pitch to become flatter as the match progressed, Gregory took the understandable decision to enforce the follow-on.Tea was taken before the Sussex second innings began. Both Hughes and Haines played positively, raising a half-century stand off just 57 balls in warm late afternoon sunshine.Overton’s successful afternoon almost got better with the total on 82 as Haines, on 43, edged a forcing shot only for Tom Lammonby to spill a sharp chance above his head at second slip. The opener profited to reach an attractive fifty off 72 balls.Hughes was equally impressive, bringing up the century stand with a swept four off Leach before falling in the same over, caught behind off bat and pad. Haines quickly followed, leg before to Pretorius and suddenly Sussex were 100 for two, still 86 behind.Jack Carson, promoted in the order, fell to Henry with 11 runs added. And when Leach had Clark caught behind attempting an injudicious slog-sweep it was clearly Somerset’s day.

Man City planning to beat Liverpool, Real Madrid and Barcelona to free signing

Manchester City will hope to ride the crest of a wave as they plot a route into the Premier League race, and the Citizens may also be preparing for a fight with Liverpool to sign a lucrative international at zero cost.

Manchester City look to kick on after derby victory

The Etihad Stadium paid witness to some raucous scenes last weekend as Manchester City swept aside Manchester United to move within six points of Liverpool at the top of the table.

Before the match, Erling Haaland urged his new teammates to take on added responsibility after a busy transfer window that saw his side lose a number of influential figures. When it mattered, they all stepped up to deliver a stirring display.

Speaking after his side recorded a convincing triumph, Pep Guardiola reserved special praise for his Norwegian talisman and homegrown hero Phil Foden, who both got themselves on the scoresheet.

Starting with Haaland, the former Barcelona manager said: “Erling has been incredible since the start but this season he is better than ever. I would say better than the Treble year. He’s dynamic and I don’t judge him for the clearance, we want him to score goals and to help us.”

Later, he added on Foden: “We missed him so much and the season before he was the best player in the Premier League so we need him, he has a work ethic. Phil is the core, the heart of the club, from the academy and he loves City. To have him back is good news.”

With 2026 not too far in the distance, Manchester City are set to block interest from Al Nassr in a £112 million move for Phil Foden, and they now have their eye on one of his international teammates.

Man City ready to up the ante to land Marc Guehi in 2026

According to The Mirror, Manchester City are huge admirers of Marc Guehi, planning a move and will throw everything at landing him on a free transfer in 2026, with Crystal Palace unwilling to sanction his exit in the January window.

Despite Liverpool’s well-documented interest in the former Chelsea man alongside Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Juventus, the Citizens are hopeful they can secure his services without having to pay a transfer fee, teeing up the saga of next summer.

Man City brewing homegrown Guehi in "one of the most talented teen CBs"

Manchester City could be brewing their homegrown Marc Guehi with this talented centre-back.

ByKelan Sarson Sep 14, 2025

Labelled a “monster in defence” by Bobby Manzi, Guehi has handled himself exceptionally well despite being at the centre of a failed move to Anfield on Deadline Day, even scoring once in seven appearances across all competitions.

Guardiola’s backline has been altered following the departures of Manuel Akanji and Kyle Walker, and there may be more movement to come as they step up their efforts to land Guehi.

It remains to be seen who will win the battle for his signature, with Barca and Real described as ready to move. But regardless, Manchester City seem ready to go all-in given the lucrative possibility of signing a reliable Premier League performer.

Man Utd hit gold on "generational" star worth more than Hojlund & Rashford

It feels as if every decision being made by Ruben Amorim at Manchester United is coming back to bite him, with the Portuguese coach in grave danger of becoming the latest casualty of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Scrutiny surrounds his persistence with the 3-4-3 system at Old Trafford, although his selection decisions have also been put under the microscope – not least selecting a goalkeeper in Altay Bayindir who now ranks among the bottom 3% of his Premier League peers for save percentage, as per FBref.

Elsewhere, meanwhile, the club’s summer business is also now being picked apart – perhaps with an element of hindsight – with numerous figures beginning to catch fire in their new surroundings.

Indeed, Antony has picked up where he left off at Real Betis last term, after notably registering a goal and an assist against Nottingham Forest last month, while Alejandro Garnacho played his part in Chelsea’s opener in the 1-0 win over Benfica in midweek.

Fellow ‘bomb squad’ member Marcus Rashford, too, was in the headlines following his Champions League display for Barcelona, with ex-teammate Rasmus Hojlund has also proving the doubters wrong with his own swift start in Naples.

Hojlund & Rashford's fine start to the season

One misdemeanour too many proved the end of Rashford’s relationship with Amorim back in December, with the 27-year-old having not been seen in a United shirt since trudging off away at Viktoria Plzen, prior to his exclusion from the Manchester derby.

Shipped off to Aston Villa in January, before sealing a dream move to Barcelona over the summer, the high-profile forward has begun to find his groove away from the bright lights of Old Trafford, amid what has been a particularly encouraging few weeks in Catalonia.

A breathtaking brace against Newcastle United stands out as the obvious high point, although Rashford’s sublime assist for Ferran Torres on Wednesday night ensured he now boasts seven goal involvements in just nine games for his new side.

Elsewhere on the continental stage, Hojlund showcased that he’s doing his best to follow in Scott McTominay’s footsteps at Napoli, having twice combined with Kevin De Bruyne to help steer the Serie A outfit to a 2-1 win over Sporting CP in midweek.

Much like his first goal for the Italian champions against Fiorentina, the Dane’s first of the night was him at his best, tearing away from defenders on the break, before coolly converting.

With three goals from just five games under Antonio Conte, the 22-year-old already has the edge on his Old Trafford replacement, Benjamin Sesko, with that likely to be a long-running comparison this season between the two young strikers.

Rightly or wrongly, neither Hojlund nor Rashford are part of the set-up now under Amorim, with it looking unlikely that either figure will be turning out for United again – not least with Napoli and Barcelona holding an obligation and option to buy the pair, respectively.

Those two are then figures of the past, with United needing to instead look to the future.

How Rashford & Hojlund's market values compare

“The soul has gone from the club”.

Those words from Wayne Rooney perhaps summarise the situation best right now.

What is there to get behind at Manchester United? The winning formula has been deserted. The style of play is tentative and timid. Every news story emerging from the club appears to be one of doom and gloom, be it talk of more redundancies or discussion of financial losses.

The essence of United appears to be being lost, not least amid Amorim’s hesitation to turn toward the academy, with his tenure – unlike those before him – yet to see the rise of a standout youth product.

Under David Moyes, there was Adnan Januzaj. Under Louis van Gaal, there was Rashford. Under Jose Mourinho, there was McTominay. Under Erik ten Hag, there was the FA Cup final-winning duo of Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

Amorim – despite a brief period in the side for Chido Obi – has yet to truly follow suit, with his treatment of Mainoo also bordering on a sackable offence to some.

Previously the star of Ten Hag’s final season, and a vital part of England’s Euro 2024 surge, the 20-year-old has now drifted to the periphery, yet to even start a league game this term despite the ongoing midfield woes.

Tipped to depart on loan or even permanently over the summer, the Stockport native is bizarrely being overlooked by the Portuguese coach, even despite looking like a “generational talent” previously, in the words of that man Hojlund.

In flashes, his quality has been seen this season, not least when breezing through Manchester City’s midfield in the derby, although with Amorim wedded to his system, he seemingly can’t find room for arguably United’s brightest talent.

Yes, the course of a young player’s career can be turbulent, yet the lack of faith shown in Mainoo by his manager is puzzling. As Gary Neville suggested earlier this year, this is a player that the club should be “building around”.

And rightly so, this is a player following the traditions of the club in rising from the youth ranks before dazzling at the elite level.

Such is his talent and potential, he is now even deemed to be worth as much as £52m, as per Football Transfers, placing him ahead of both Hojlund (£41m) and Rashford (£47m).

Had things gone differently this summer, Mainoo might well have joined that pairing in heading for the exit door, although thankfully he remains – ready to fight for his place in that midfield.

If Amorim continues to ignore such a high-value, ‘generational’ midfielder, hopefully the next manager will see things differently.

Overseas players begin to leave even as IPL prepares Plan B for resumption in May

Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad have been shortlisted to host the 16 remaining IPL 2025 matches if the tournament resumes in May after being suspended on Friday. ESPNcricinfo has learned that the IPL chose the three southern Indian cities as part of a likely plan in case it gets the nod from the Indian government to resume the tournament. On Friday, the BCCI suspended the IPL for a week because of the cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan over the past few days. It could not be confirmed if the BCCI has decided on a cut-off date to decide whether to resume the IPL if it were to take place in May.Despite the proactive step in keeping the three venues ready, the BCCI officials acknowledged the difficulty of resuming the IPL quickly in the current environment. Franchise officials were informally informed of this on Friday, and several team officials ESPNcricinfo spoke to indicated that the remainder of the season could be played later in the year.Among the most significant challenges for the BCCI when it comes to a May resumption is to get the overseas players to return. Immediately after the suspension was announced, teams started disbanding, and players started to get on the next available flights to their respective destinations. A majority of the overseas players are expected to leave India by the end of Saturday. The PBKS vs DC game in Dharamsala was called off after only 10.1 overs•Associated Press

While the franchises remain optimistic that most overseas players would return if the tournament were to resume later in May, they admitted there would be no guarantees if the window extended beyond May 25, when the IPL 2025 final was scheduled to be played in Kolkata. That’s because of the bilateral commitments for several players, as well as the World Test Championship (WTC) final between Australia and South Africa, starting on June 11 at Lord’s.A total of 57 matches had been completed in IPL 2025, and the 58th was underway on May 8 between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) in Dharamsala, which was called off after 10.1 overs of play. The IPL has not yet taken a call on whether that match would be replayed. There are 12 league matches remaining, and then the four playoffs. Originally, Hyderabad was meant to host the first qualifier and the eliminator, with Kolkata hosting the second qualifier and the final.

Chelsea star is in danger of becoming the new Madueke after Bayern

Chelsea’s summer transfer window once again made headlines, combining record spending with significant sales.

After finishing fourth in the Premier League last season, winning the Europa Conference League, and lifting the Club World Cup by beating PSG 3-0 in the summer final, the Blues are back in the Champions League for the first time since 2023.

The club continued to invest heavily, bringing in João Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Alejandro Garnacho, Jorrel Hato, and Liam Delap, among others, for huge fees.

At the same time, Chelsea balanced the books by offloading players such as Christopher Nkunku, João Félix, and notably, Noni Madueke.

Under Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s youthful squad has shown promise but also inconsistency.

Two wins against Fulham and West Ham have been tempered by draws with Crystal Palace and Brentford, a reflection of a side still searching for rhythm.

Their return to the Champions League offered a reality check about the demands of competing at Europe’s highest level. While Madueke thrived for Arsenal, a Blues winger struggled.

Noni Madueke: From Chelsea to Arsenal

Madueke was once seen as a cornerstone of Chelsea’s rebuild.

The 23-year-old right-winger scored 20 goals and registered nine assists in 92 appearances during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Explosive when on form, he could change games with pace, dribbling, and direct running.

However, his Chelsea career was defined as much by frustration as by highlights.

The club decided to sell him to Arsenal for £52m this summer, a transfer that drew an immediate backlash from Gunners supporters.

More than 5,000 fans signed a petition under the hashtag #NoToMadueke, questioning the move.

Arsenal pressed ahead regardless, handing Madueke a full 90 minutes on his Champions League debut against Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday.

Statistically, Madueke has always been a player who offers high involvement in forward play.

Last season, he averaged 6.81 progressive carries per 90 minutes, a measure of how often he drives the ball upfield.

He also attempted a high volume of shots, posting 1.33 shots on target per 90 minutes with an accuracy rate of 37.5%.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

These numbers highlight both his intent and his end product – a winger eager to make things happen, though not always efficient. One Chelsea winger is like that now.

Chelsea's new Noni Madueke

Chelsea’s 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich in their Champions League opener showed just how raw this youthful team remains.

Defensive errors – including Trevoh Chalobah’s own goal after Michael Olise’s cross and a clumsy Moises Caicedo foul that gifted Harry Kane a penalty – set the tone for a tough night.

In attack, Pedro Neto was handed the role of left-winger in Maresca’s 4-2-3-1.

It proved a difficult evening. Neto was replaced in the 68th minute after a performance that earned him a 5.8 match rating.

His individual numbers reflected the struggle:

Neto’s inconsistency mirrored some of the very frustrations Chelsea fans once voiced about Madueke.

He can explode with pace and creativity, but also drift out of games, as he did in Munich.

Across last season, Neto managed 35 matches with ten goal involvements – identical to Madueke’s tally in 32 appearances.

While Neto averaged fewer progressive carries (5.00 per 90) and shots on target (0.67 per 90 at a 28.8% accuracy), he outperformed Madueke in progressive passing distance, covering an average of 96 metres per 90 minutes compared to Madueke’s 82.0.

The data illustrate why Chelsea’s decision to sell Madueke and entrust Neto with a similar role has sparked debate.

Both wingers bring pace and unpredictability, both contribute to chance creation, and both are capable of flashes of brilliance. But the numbers confirm their limitations as well.

Madueke’s higher output in progressive carries and shots suggests a winger more inclined to take risks and force opportunities.

Neto, on the other hand, contributes more in ball progression through passing, reflected in his superior progressive passing distance.

Each offers something slightly different, yet neither has consistently delivered match-winning influence.

When comparing shot creation, the two players are virtually inseparable. Madueke averaged 3.50 shot-creating actions per 90, while Neto produced 3.57.

This parity shows that both are involved in their teams’ attacking buildup, even if their execution varies.

Madueke’s numbers underline why Arsenal were willing to pay a premium despite fan scepticism.

His willingness to carry the ball forward and threaten goalkeepers with regular attempts makes him a high-upside option.

Neto’s profile fits Chelsea’s philosophy under Maresca – linking play, stretching the pitch, and helping transition through midfield – but his display against Bayern revealed how much more is needed to reach Champions League standard.

For Chelsea, the swap of Madueke for Neto feels less like a fresh direction and more like a gamble on a winger with a strikingly similar profile: exciting, unpredictable, and still searching for the consistency required to define matches at the highest level.

Carragher reveals £200k-a-week Liverpool star must be dropped "right now"

After Liverpool lost for the second time in the space of a few days courtesy of Galatasaray, Jamie Carragher has called for one of Arne Slot’s biggest stars to be dropped.

Slot "disappointed" again by Liverpool

After needing late goals in several of their opening games to salvage victory, something seemed off about the Premier League champions. They looked vulnerable and defeat seemed inevitable. The late goal simply wasn’t always going to arrive. And, as expected, Crystal Palace have since exposed that uncomfortable fact for Slot’s side.

The Eagles stole the late show from the Reds to hand them their first defeat at the weekend and Galatasaray have now followed suit to deal Slot back-to-back defeats for just the second time in his Liverpool career. For many, the decision to award Galatasaray a first-half penalty was contentious, but that shouldn’t have been that for Liverpool, who never truly reacted to going behind.

Having his say on his side’s defeat, Slot told reporters: “Again, disappointed. For me, this was a different performance on and off the ball [than Crystal Palace]. First half, we played quite well and had a big chance to go 1-0 up.

“It is difficult to compare this situation to before. We are sometimes a bit outsmarted in situations like this, and I cannot blame Dominik Szoboszlai for the situation. They make a 20% penalty a 100% penalty, which is very smart from them.”

Liverpool star who's "on par with Salah & VVD" had his worst game under Slot

Liverpool endured a night to forget as they were beaten by Galatasaray in the Champions League.

ByAngus Sinclair Oct 1, 2025

It doesn’t get any easier for the Reds, either. They travel to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday and club legend Carragher has already called on one player to be dropped against the Blues.

Carragher calls for Liverpool to drop Wirtz

In a brutal assessment, Carragher called for Liverpool to drop Florian Wirtz “right now” following another disappointing display from the £200,000-a-week German. The former Bayer Leverkusen star is without a goal or assist since the Community Shield and is struggling to get up to speed at Anfield.

Whether it’s been out wide or in midfield, it’s hard to argue with Carragher’s verdict. Something is wrong with this Liverpool side and it’s only natural that the blame goes the way of the £116m midfielder who hasn’t contributed since Wembley.

Slot certainly has a big decision to make. A few, in fact. As the Chelsea game approaches, Liverpool must lay down a marker as Premier League champions.
