Smith: Can't remember being unsure two days out which pitch I would be playing on

Australia left the ground on Tuesday still in the dark over which of the two surfaces would be used for the match

Will Ahmedabad give the best batting pitch of the series?

Steven Smith could not remember another occasion where he had been unsure which pitch he would be playing on for a Test match two days out from it starting. That was the situation which emerged on Tuesday in Ahmedabad with Australia leaving the ground still in the dark over which of the two surfaces would be used for the final Test. However, after the visitors had departed the picture became clearer. India’s hierarchy focused their attention on the drier, black-soil pitch, instead of the red-soil one which also appeared significantly greener – although the groundsman had told Smith both would have been significantly trimmed of grass.”[There] might have been a couple of [pitches] prepared maybe a bit longer out than two days but I can’t remember two days,” Smith said.Related

Cummins will miss final Test too, Smith to lead in Ahmedabad

Even by the time Australia had finished training on Tuesday, around four hours after arriving at the ground, the likely Test pitch had already started to change character.”I didn’t go out and have a look in the afternoon but Alex Carey did,” Smith said. “It looked completely different, a lot drier in the afternoon. It’s very hot here, 37 degrees, which gives it a chance to dry out and I think that the cover was on for a bit today. So they’re potentially worried that it’s drying out too much. It certainly changed in a few hours. Having a look today we’ll be able to potentially see what it’s going to do.”With three three-day Tests so far – and the latter barely reaching that far – this series is well on track to finish with the fewest balls bowled in a four-match series. However, Smith said the groundsman had indicated that this game would go longer than the othersIt all points to Australia again fielding three frontline spinners particularly now Cameron Green is available to balance the side. He was only needed for two overs in Indore, while Mitchell Starc was called on for 12.Smith took the opportunity for a little swipe at some of the punditry that suggested Australia should have stuck to their fast-bowling strengths with three quicks and just one spinner. That was the model which brought the 2004 series victory but on very different surfaces.Scott Boland partnered with Pat Cummins in Nagpur before Cummins was the lone quick in Delhi. Then Starc and Green both returned in Indore. Victory in the third Test has left the team with a sense of vindication that their planning has been correct.”It’s been weird with a bit of the commentary back home, people talking about us playing three quicks and one spinner,” Smith said. “It’s kind of mind-boggling to me when we look at these surfaces and we see what we’ve had, 11 innings in six days or something like that, and spinners have taken the bulk of the wickets and you see how difficult it is to play the spin.”It’s kind of odd to hear that kind of commentary, but we’ve had faith in what we’re trying to do and it’s good that we are able to show that we can play with three spinners and win. We weren’t too far away in Delhi either, outside of that hour of madness. Nice to know our plans and everything we are trying to do can work.”Smith looks for more lower-order runsOne area where Smith would like to see improvement is the productivity of the lower order, where India have overwhelmed what Australia have been able to produce. Even in the victory they lost 6 for 11 on the second day.Axar Patel is the second-highest run-getter in the series with 185 runs in four innings at an average of 92.50•BCCI

From No. 8 onwards, India have scored 307 runs at 25.58 in the series compared to Australia’s 84 and 4.94. In comparison, although Rohit Sharma has scored the lone century, the top seven are all-but identical: Australia have made 776 runs at 22.92 and India 709 runs at 22.15.Australia are not expecting the level of contribution that Axar Patel is able to provide – he would not be out of place in the top six – but want to find a way to eke out partnerships.”The tail is something we’ve spoken about, probably as batters [they] haven’t contributed as much as we would have liked,” Smith said. “That’s been a big difference when you see someone like Axar who has been incredibly difficult to get out. And in terms of our top six versus their top six, there’s not a huge difference in averages for the series.”There is a considerable amount at stake in this final match. A 3-1 scoreline would suggest that there is still a gap when playing India in their conditions, albeit not as wide as some had considered, whereas a 2-2 share would be a remarkable outcome for Australia, especially considering where they were after the second Test in Delhi.”I think it would be a huge achievement for this group, or any touring team, that comes here to India and wins two Test matches,” Smith said. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to do it earlier in the series and give ourselves a chance to win but to draw the series here would be a huge plus and positive.”

Litchfield credits Mooney's influence after perfect ODI debut

Phoebe Litchfield is one of the rising stars of Australian women’s cricket and the teenager revealed she had recently modelled her game on national team-mate Beth Mooney.Fellow left-hander Mooney, one of the world’s best batters, presented Litchfield with her ODI debut cap before the 19-year-old made an unbeaten 78 off 92 balls in the eight-wicket win over Pakistan in Brisbane on Monday. The pair opened in the run chase but Mooney was soon out for 1. Litchfield went on with it and combined with captain Meg Lanning (67 off 76) to lead Australia to victory in an innings Mooney would have been proud of.Related

Litchfield credits her father Andrew for giving her a technical grounding in cricket but Mooney, the master of pacing a run chase, has provided her with a batting blueprint.”In recent times I have looked to Beth Mooney, especially in the T20 game and the way she goes about it,” Litchfield said. “She doesn’t need to bash sixes and fours. She just goes about it and accumulates, so I have taken some inspiration off her.”I think I have improved my temperament and also my power game. I was a ‘nurdeler’ in my first few years. I’d glide it to third and [score] a lot of runs behind the wicket so I have worked on that. Temperament [wise]…leaving balls today, I probably would have lashed at one in the first over if it was the old me.”Litchfield built her innings superbly.  She grafted early and punished only loose deliveries before unleashing at the end of her knock, lofting one drive cleanly over mid-off for six with aplomb. It was fitting that stalwart Mooney had made the cap presentation, where she had prepared a speech and said plenty of positive things about the debutant.”It was so sweet and she gave me the [speech] notes. I’ve got that in my cricket kit and I reckon that will stay in there for the entirety of hopefully a long career,” Litchfield said. The recently retired Rachael Haynes and injured Alyssa Healy opened in the last ODI Australia had played at the ODI World Cup last year.Litchfield is humble about her future prospects ahead of the T20 World Cup where she will tour South Africa with Healy on her return from a calf injury.”With Alyssa Healy’s injury there is a spot at the top of the order and I put my hand up but you look at Midge [Healy] and Mooney’s success, and even Rachael’s success, and I am not looking to disrupt that,” she said.”I am happy to run drinks for a long time. I am just happy to be around this group. If there is an opportunity I’ll take it but I will be pretty happy to see Midge back.”

United suffered a humiliating defeat in the Europa League final against Tottenham on Wednesday night, with a lacklustre performance that drew widespread criticism. Manager Amorim's tactics and team selection were heavily scrutinized, with many questioning his ability to turn things around at Old Trafford. Jamie O'Hara has become one of the most vocal critics of the performance, saying Amorim should walk away from his position at the club.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Amorim's tenure at United has been heavily scrutinised, especially given the team's struggles in the Premier League, where they currently languish in 16th place. This latest defeat in a major final has only intensified the pressure on the Portuguese manager. The club's cost-cutting measures and potential fire sale under Jim Ratcliffe further complicate matters, casting doubt on their ability to attract top talent and rebuild the squad.

WHAT O'HARA SAID

Speaking to Sky Sports, O'Hara said: "Shocking. I thought they were terrible. They were so bad. It is actually probably the worst Manchester United final performance I've ever seen. They were absolutely awful.

"The manager inept of ideas, didn't know how to change it, didn't know how to affect the game. Made substitutions too late. He should walk because he ain't the right man for the job. He's really not the right man for the job. And the performances he's put in since he's gone there have been shocking. He should walk but no one walks anymore because there's too much money on offer. So he's not going to walk.

"Who's going to join United? They're 16th in the table. They've got no European football and everyone knows that the club is cost-cutting the wages. They're getting rid of everyone. With Jim Ratcliffe, it's like a fire sale. Everyone's up for sale. Who actually is going to want to join United?"

Dhoni grateful for Chennai's 'love and affection' during 'last phase of my career'

MS Dhoni – “It feels good to be here, the fans always stay back to hear me out”•Associated Press

MS Dhoni is 41 years old and has been part of 240 IPL games, but he came into this season after close to a year-long gap following last year’s edition. He knows he’s at the twilight of his career, but believes that it will not stop him from cherishing every moment of a tournament he has won four times with Chennai Super Kings.”[I am] Definitely old, you know, you can’t really shy away from that. Whatever said and done, it’s [the] last phase of my career,” Dhoni said after leading Super Kings to victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Chepauk. But he put a positive spin on the situation by drawing upon the loyal and vigorous support of his fans in Chennai, who came out in droves and sent out a cheer so loud that Dhoni had to wait before he could speak.Related

“However long I play, it’s very important to enjoy the IPL. After two years, it has been a case where they [the crowd] can come [and] enjoy the game. It’s a full house, they have the new stand, so it feels good to play here.”And I said at the start of the tournament, we haven’t played in Chennai a lot, we have only played like six seasons. So it feels good to be here. They have given a lot of love and affection, and they always stay back to hear me out.”This year, Dhoni has had to mentor a mostly young bowling line-up with limited experience. On Friday, it featured the likes of Akash Singh, Maheesh Theekshana, Tushar Deshpande and Matheesha Pathirana, who bowled 14 of the 20 overs. While Ravindra Jadeja did the bulk of the damage by taking three wickets, Dhoni trusted Akash and Deshpande with the new ball and used spin to tie down the batters in the middle overs. Super Kings conceded 60 runs and took two wickets between overs 6 and 16, including a 36-ball period where no boundaries were scored. When asked about his methods of guiding the youngsters, Dhoni said he offers the first say to the bowlers.”I always tell them that the first preference of field and whatever you want to bowl is with you. Yes, you can convey to me, I may say that, ‘no, I am looking for something like this.’ Other than that, from behind, if the batter is somebody who can play the scoop shot behind, then I try to tell them, ‘okay, we’ll keep the fielder behind then bring in some other fielder on the top.”With [Dwayne] Bravo it was difficult because he would never agree. But the good thing was he would keep an eye on the batters. But with these youngsters, you can tell them, and after that it is their call as to what field they want.”When asked about his wicketkeeping despite his age and lack of game time coming into the tournament, Dhoni let out his competitive spirit by half-jokingly complaining about not being awarded the best catch award for his take to dismiss Aiden Markram. Dhoni, standing up to the stumps, had little time to react and was wrong-footed, but managed to move his hands across and take a sharp catch.”Still they didn’t give the best catch [award], I was in such a wrong position,” Dhoni said. “Just because you wear gloves, people think it’s very easy but I felt that was a fantastic catch. Not because of your ability but at times you’re at the wrong place at the wrong time when you catch it.”

South Africa smash record chase in first 500-run T20I

Quinton de Kock’s first T20I hundred – and joint sixth-fastest in the format off 43 balls – helped South Africa complete the highest successful chase in T20Is. De Kock’s knock innings came in the second half of a run-fest on a belter of a pitch at SuperSport Park.In total, 517 runs were scored, the most in a T20 game, including 35 sixes, the most in a T20 international and two fewer than the most in any T20 match.Related

  • Rabada to Hendricks: 'They're about ten runs short'

  • SA vs WI records galore – 517 runs, 81 boundaries, 35 sixes

Johnson Charles was responsible for 11 of those sixes as he blasted his way to the joint second-fastest T20I century, and fastest by a West Indian, as they posted their highest score in the format. In the end, it was not enough. It was a tough day for bowlers on both sides, who struggled to get their lengths right. Only Kagiso Rabada conceded at under ten runs an over and there were poor disciplines on both sides, especially by West Indies. They bowled 10 wides and a no-ball compared to South Africa’s four wides and may see that as an important difference in the final result. The series decider will be played about 40 kilometres away, at the Wanderers, on Tuesday.

Charles and Mayers do a demolition job

The early dismissal of Brandon King dissolved into a footnote when Kyle Mayers and Charles got together for an exhibition of power-hitting that dismantled the home attack. Marco Jansen’s opening over cost 20, as Charles peppered the off side and Sisanda Magala’s first over went for 21 runs thanks to a merciless Mayers. He hit the biggest six of the innings when he sent Sisanda Magala 114 metres over midwicket, with the ball carrying over the hospitality suite roofs and into the practice nets. Charles brought up his fifty off 23 balls when he hit Tabraiz Shamsi over square leg, Mayers followed with a 24-ball fifty, and also brought his milestone up against Shamsi.West Indies were 62 for1 after the powerplay and 137 for 1 after the first 10 overs, which was their fastest start in a T20I. The openers were separated at the start of the 11th over, when Mayers miscued a pull off Jansen but by then, they had shared the third-highest stand for West Indies in T20I cricket – and all three of them have come against South Africa – and plundered 135 runs in 58 balls at a scoring rate of just under 14 runs an over.

The carnage continues

Charles was 18 runs away from his century when both Mayers and Nicholas Pooran fell to Jansen but he was undeterred. He sent Kagiso Rabada for six over square leg, then hit a Magala full toss over point for four and reached his century with a drive over extra-cover. Jansen was brought back and Charles sent him for sixes over extra-cover and long-off and then four through fine leg before he was bowled by a yorker that he seemed to have kept out but trickled onto his stumps. Charles scored 73 of his 118 runs on the leg side, including eight of his 11 sixes, and when he was bowled, West Indies still had six overs to bat.Johnson Charles’ 39-ball hundred ended in vain for West Indies•AFP/Getty Images

Shepherding the finish

Romario Shepherd picked up from where Charles’ left off when he flicked a Parnell full toss off his pads for his first boundary. Then he tucked into Magala and took two sixes off his third over, prompting Aiden Markram to bring Rabada back. He wasn’t spared either as Shepherd and Rovman Powell hit 18 runs of his final over. Magala returned to deliver the last over and could not find his yorker. His full tosses were slammed over midwicket and long-on as West Indies scored 79 runs off the last six overs. Shepherd was unbeaten on 41 off 18 balls and Magala ended with the sixth most-expensive T20I figures.

De Kock and SA break records

There’s probably no better batter to get a record chase underway than de Kock and he responded in exactly the way South Africa would have wanted. He started with consecutive fours off Akeal Hosein before slamming three successive sixes off Sheldon Cottrell in an over that cost 29. De Kock was then dropped on 32, when he tried to reverse-sweep Hosein and got a thin edge but Nicholas Pooran could not hold on, and he went on to make West Indies pay. In that over, South Africa equalled the quickest fifty by a Full Member team in T20Is and de Kock hit Hosein back over his head for six and then for back-to-back fours.De Kock then notched up South Africa’s fastest T20I fifty, off 15 balls. In the process, South Africa broke the record for the most runs by a Full Member team in a powerplay – 102 – and the fastest hundred by a Full Member in T20Is. They went on to score the most runs in the first 10 overs of a men’s T20I – 149 – and the 152-run stand between de Kock and Reeza Hendricks was South Africa’s fourth-highest of all time. De Kock brought up his hundred in the 11th over with a single.

Hendricks helps himself

With 46 runs off 21 balls in the first-wicket stand it would seem unfair to call Hendricks’ role merely a supporting act and he soon had the chance to take centre stage. After de Kock’s dismissal, Hendricks scored his first six when he sent Odean Smith over extra-cover and brought up his half-century off 22 balls. It was his fifth fifty in his last seven T20I innings and he was intent on moving through the gears from there. He scored 16 runs off the next five balls he faced including a scoop for six off Powell before he top-edged a slower bouncer and was caught behind. South Africa still needed 66 runs off 44 balls at that stage.

Markram and Klaasen take it home

West Indies pulled things back a touch after seeing the back of Hendricks. There were only two boundaries between the 14th and 16th over and David Miller was caught on the long-off boundary before Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen came together to finish things off. Markram destroyed Raymon Reifer’s figures when he scored 17 runs off his fourth over, including a six over long-on, and Klaasen took successive fours off Jason Holder to take the asking rate to less than a run a ball. South Africa won with seven deliveries to spare.

Gouiri has echoed the criticisms of his team-mate Adrien Rabiot and coach Roberto De Zerbi, who feel their efforts have been overlooked. In an interview with L'Equipe, the striker name checked De Zerbi, Greenwood, and Rabiot as being deserving of greater recognition for their efforts. Marseille overcame a poor run of form in March, to win four of their last five games in Ligue 1, ultimately finishing in second behind PSG.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Greenwood finished as the joint top scorer in the league alongside Ballon d'Or favourite Ousmane Dembélé, who was recognised as player of the year by the UNFP. The nominees were announced in April, after les Olympiens had lost five of their last seven games. Rabiot had earlier expressed his displeasure, saying it was "unbelievable" that he was not named in the team of the season. De Zerbi joked he needed "five or six more cigarettes" to cope with the idea his players were not considered worthy of recognition by their peers.

  • WHAT GOUIRI SAID

Gouiri said of De Zerbi: "He's a great coach. It's a scandal that he wasn't even nominated for the UNFP trophies. Everyone thinks it's normal that he came second with this squad, but it's his first season in Ligue 1, he didn't know the Championship, he has a new team. What he's doing is great."

On Greenwood, the Algerian striker commented: "It's the same, a scandal. He's the top scorer in Ligue 1 (tied with Ousmane Dembélé). He's a world-class striker. Playing alongside him is a pleasure. He didn't even need time to adapt, he can play with both feet."

Finally, on Rabiot, Gouiri said: "It's a triple scandal in fact. How can we not put him in? But the best answer was given on the pitch. Adrien Rabiot is one of the best midfielders in Ligue 1 and he doesn't need a trophy or a top team to prove it.

"The only explanation is that at the time of the votes, we were a little less good."

Chivas Guadalajara has officially kicked off their preparations for the Apertura 2025, but one notable absence early in the preseason has raised eyebrows – Javier “Chicharito” Hernández. Following his participation in routine medical and physical evaluations, the veteran striker has been missing from on-field training sessions, sparking speculation among fans and media alike.

According to, the reason behind Hernández's absence is not related to a sports injury, but rather a personal medical decision. The former LA Galaxy forward recently underwent a vasectomy, a procedure that temporarily sidelines him from high-intensity physical activity. Currently, he remains active in the club’s gym, focusing on moderate upper-body workouts under the watchful eye of the medical staff.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Contrary to rumors of a potential new injury setback, Chicharito is expected to be available throughout the preseason. His time away from full training is precautionary and part of a standard recovery process following the surgery.

Head coach Gabriel Milito and his staff are not concerned about his status. While the striker is not yet cleared for field work or high-impact drills, he is making steady progress in his recovery through rehabilitation and gym-based routines.

Chivas will not be losing their marquee forward for long. The team is set to conduct their preseason camp in Barra de Navidad from June 3 to 12, and Hernández is expected to join his teammates there and resume full training.

Hernández still has one year remaining on his contract with Guadalajara. However, given his limited impact since returning to Liga MX, a contract extension appears unlikely at this stage.

Getty Images SportDID YOU KNOW?

Hernández’s much-anticipated return to Chivas has, so far, failed to live up to the expectations of fans, club executives, and the striker himself. Since rejoining the Guadalajara side, the former Manchester United and LA Galaxy forward has made 34 appearances—scoring just three goals.

It’s a far cry from the impact many hoped he would have, especially given his legendary status within Mexican football.

Now, with the arrival of new head coach Gabriel Milito, there’s cautious optimism surrounding a potential resurgence for the 36-year-old in what could be his final year with the club. The Argentine manager, known for his structured and intense style of play, may provide the tactical clarity and motivation Chicharito needs to rediscover his scoring touch.

Whether this final chapter at Chivas ends with redemption or disappointment remains to be seen, but time is running out.

Van Niekerk shakes off nerves on debut but Sunrisers can't shake off Stars

Paige Scholfield and Bryony Smith provide telling contributions at Lord’s

Valkerie Baynes25-May-2023A friendship forged half a decade ago at Surrey Stars turned into a surprise opening partnership as Dane van Niekerk played her first game for Sunrisers alongside Mady Villiers in what turned out to be a fighting defeat at the hands of South East Stars in their Charlotte Edwards Cup clash at Lord’s.Villiers had batted at No. 5 in Sunrisers’ first game of the campaign, a loss to Central Sparks, and scored 70 from her usual position of No. 4 as Sunrisers upset Vipers in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, which remains their only win so far in the history of the competition which started in 2020.But she strode out with van Niekerk, the former South Africa captain in the next phase of her career following her tumultuous retirement from international cricket, after Sunrisers won the toss and elected to bat. The move didn’t quite come off this time as they put on just 32 runs before van Niekerk fell attempting to slog-sweep a Paige Scholfield delivery which rattled into her off stump and Villiers fell a short time later, bowled by Phoebe Franklin to make it 37 for 2.Related

Van Niekerk’s last competitive match had been on April 11 at the FairBreak Invitational and it showed in her 17 off 19 balls with flashes of her brilliance permeating some scratchiness as she struggled to get Freya Davies off the square initially before clubbing the third and fifth balls of Davies’ second over for four, with Villiers having also found the boundary off the first. And van Niekerk admitted to having a few nerves before she walked out to bat.”I was shaking,” van Niekerk told ESPNcricinfo. “I didn’t shake like that in a long time, in the first over, but I just told myself, ‘don’t be a wuss, you’ve been doing it for a long time,’ and got over it and hopefully I can just get a good contribution going in this tournament for the team.”I think with everything that happened, you say ‘I don’t want to prove a point’, but in the back of your mind you go, ‘I probably should’, but I think it was just I didn’t want to fail. In the back of my head I was like, ‘just don’t get a duck, don’t get a duck, don’t get a duck’ and when I got that first run, the nerves settled. It’s been a while since I played a competitive game, there was a big crowd out so it was just a bit nervy but I’m glad I got it out the way.””My strike rate [89.47] didn’t show probably how I felt,” she added. “I felt like I was hitting 85% out of the middle so that’s good signs for me. At least I didn’t walk off thinking I’m in trouble here. I’m obviously disappointed I wasn’t hitting gaps, but that will come with the more I play.”Scholfield’s 3 for 34 were crucial in keeping Sunrisers to 132 for 8, which looked below par but could have been much worse after they had slumped to 64 for 6 until a 48-run stand for between Jo Gardner and Eva Gray, who top-scored for her side with an ubeaten 34 off 24 balls, salvaged something from the innings.Sunrisers weren’t helped by the chaotic run out of Amara Carr, attempting a second run off Alice Davidson-Richards when she and batting partner Cordelia Griffith almost collided then engaged in an ungainly sideways dance, moving wider and wider of the pitch as they tried to get round each other. Carr was caught short of her ground as Davidson-Richards collected Scholfield’s throw from deep backward square and whipped off the bails at the non-striker’s end.Grace Scrivens, dropping from opener to No. 4, had already been run out, and when Griffith holed out off a full toss to give Scholfield her second wicket and Florence Miller was trapped lbw by Bryony Smith, Sunrisers were in disarray. It was only down to Gardner and Gray that they had something to defend. But then Garder was run out in another mix-up and captain Kelly Castle was bowled cheaply by Scholfield to leave Sunrisers with plenty of work to do with the ball.Smith, who scored 83 in Stars’ loss to Vipers on Tuesday, set the run chase off to a strong start with three fours off Gray’s second over, the fourth of the reply.Villiers, who had taken three wickets against Sparks to add to three three-wicket hauls from the 50-over competition so far this season, trapped Aylish Cranstone lbw with her first ball but it was to be her only wicket for this match.Alice Capsey sped to 24 off just eight balls but fell as Abtaha Maqsood also claimed a wicket with her first ball. Villiers and Maqsood both missed difficult caught-and-bowled chances off Smith, who reached 38 before picking out Gardner at deep midwicket off Gray. By then, Stars needed 42 runs off 52 balls and while Scrivens picked up the wickets of Tash Farrant and Scholfield to take the match deeper than had looked likely, Stars eased past their target with an over to spare, leaving Sunrisers still chasing their second-ever win in the competition, now in its third season. But van Niekerk, who could be seen advising England Under-19s captain Scrivens while she was bowling, was confident success would come.”The nice thing is I’ve been through that with the South African team over the years and it just comes down to, first of all, the belief,” van Niekerk said. “You need to believe that you can beat any team. You can’t go on what happened in the past, you have to believe. Also the experience in these crunch situations, and we don’t get it right all the time, but just having a reference point and I think that’s why I’m here. That’s me trying to speak to the players, trying to give my knowledge to them in certain situations.”It’s just about making sure we’re making the right decisions in those crunch situations. We brought it back really well today. The focus just shifted a little bit and that’s stuff that we will speak about more often, just shifting the focus to being very goal-based every single over. This team has got a lot of talent and a lot of potential. It’s just about getting in everything clicking.”Mady Villiers whips the ball leg side•Getty ImagesVilliers’ bond with van Niekerk – both were part of the Surrey Stars side which won the WCSL in 2018 – had been instrumental in her making the move to play in England on a two-and-a-half-month deal ahead returning to Oval Invincibles for the Hundred in August.”I want to play cricket, that’s a fact, and I know Mady very well, and I know, Eva [Gray] and Jo Gardner, so it was a no-brainer for me,” van Niekerk said. “To walk out in the first game with Mads at the top there just in a way put me at ease. We have a good laugh together.”Speaking to ESPNcricinfo last week ahead of her reunion with van Niekerk, Villiers said: “I played with her at Surrey Stars so I’ve known her for five years or so. We get on really well. She’s a great laugh and she’ll do anything for anyone and she’s great to have around the side. She just wants to enjoy her cricket again and I think she’s going to be brilliant for us.”

Imran Khan arrested in Islamabad

Imran Khan, the former Pakistan captain and Prime Minister, has been arrested in Islamabad. He was scheduled to appear at the Islamabad High Court to apply for bail in a number of cases that had required his presence, though local media reported that he has not been arrested for a charge for which he was appearing in court on Tuesday. The arrest warrant, seen by ESPNcricinfo states that Imran has been “accused of commission of the offense of corruption and corrupt practices” under a section of the National Accountability Ordinance. At approximately 2:15pm local time, Imran was arrested by, according to local media, the Pakistan Rangers, a paramilitary federal law enforcement corps in Pakistan. He was handed over to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for further investigation. Section 144, a colonial-era law that prohibits large gatherings, has also been imposed in Pakistan’s capital.Islamabad Police released a statement from their Inspector General on Twitter saying Imran had been arrested in the Al Qadir University case, an institution he founded as prime minister in 2019 and where he remains chairman. The allegations centre around the alleged involvement of the former prime minister and his wife in the university being donated the land it stands on by the influential Pakistani businessman and real estate giant Malik Riaz. The UK’s National Crime Agency seized assets worth £190m from Riaz in December 2019 and returned them to Pakistan and it is alleged links between the land allotted for the university and what the Pakistan government did with those funds that is unclear but has been the subject of a government investigative committee.Related

The current federal government in Pakistan, which replaced Imran’s government in April 2022 after a vote of no confidence, has often called for his arrest, as have several courts over the past year. There were two separate concerted attempts to arrest him from his residence in March, where police were thwarted by huge numbers of supporters gathered outside his residence to help him resist arrest. Several senior figures of Imran’s PTI party (Pakistan’s Movement for Justice) have been arrested over the last year, on charges the party says are spurious. They have all been subsequently released.Pakistan’s Supreme Court had ordered elections in Punjab, the country’s largest province, to be held on May 14, a few weeks after the constitutional mandate for the caretaker government, set up in the province in January, expired. The ruling party had rejected calls for those elections to be held in defiance of that order.Several polls have shown Imran holding a clear lead as the most popular politician in the country, and he has accused the government of thwarting Pakistani citizens’ democratic rights by refusing to hold elections.”The government and its backers are petrified of elections because so far in the last eight months, out of the 37 by elections, my party has won 30 out of them,” Imran told in March.”They want to either arrest or disqualify me because they are scared [of the fact] that my party is one of the most popular in Pakistan’s history,” he said then, as attempts to arrest him from his residence in Lahore were underway. The development escalates an already unstable political climate in the country. Last November, Imran suffered bullet wounds to his leg after an assassination attempt while he was leading a protest march in Wazirabad in Punjab.
