Wolves man Morgan Gibbs-White doesn’t need a loan, says Kevin Thelwell

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Wolves sporting director Kevin Thelwell has commented on the situation surrounding young midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White by claiming that a loan move wouldn’t be right for him this season.

What’s he said?

Speaking at the recent fans parliament, Thelwell was questioned about the plans regarding their talented development squad ahead of January with the 45-year-old also talking about Gibbs-White, who is one of their only success stories to date.

He claimed that there could be several emerging prospects that could benefit from a loan move in the upcoming transfer window, but the 19-year-old is not one of them.

Currently, the midfield starlet has been battling injury, although, that hasn’t taken away from the fact that he’s played just 120 minutes in the Premier League this season with the bulk of his appearances coming in their Europa League campaign – 63.5% to be precise, per Transfermarkt.

Thelwell said:

“We see him as a very, young player who will add more game time this season with us in Europe. I don’t think he has stalled at all. He’s in the right place with Nuno. He’s a top talent and going to be a fantastic player.”

Career in jeopardy?

The England U21 international has played 63 matches for the Wolves senior side since making his debut in January 2017, but just nine of those appearances have come this season.

Therefore, to say that he hasn’t ‘stalled’ is a little too premature as he’s clearly not been involved as much as he used to be regardless of being out injured right now – he’s been named on the bench in the Premier League six times without featuring.

By not playing, the youngster’s progression as a footballer will only be hindered long-term as he’s not getting valuable game time at the level in which Wolves are competing.

A loan move could do him a world of good, and if his performances gain some traction, he could easily return and become a regular in Nuno Santo’s future plans.

It would be a wise decision because he isn’t going to break into that long-term vision by not playing – he currently can’t prove anything to his manager as to why he should actually be involved other than when on the training pitch.

Gibbs-White won’t be short of suitable teams either considering he’s the sort of character that puts himself forward for captaincy on the international stage.

Manchester United will "take years" to get Old Trafford aura back, says Martin Keown

[ad_pod ]Old Trafford isn’t the place it used to be, we get it.It doesn’t take a genius pundit to work out that the Theatre of Dreams, a place where Manchester United have scored just four goals in their last four games and has seen Crystal Palace and Rochdale come away with their heads held high, isn’t the stronghold it used to be.Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

We hear about it every week, don’t we? When the quota goes out in the morning and “experts†are asked to make some sort of statement about United then the easiest option is to go for the declining fear factor around the colosseum that once was.ÂThat’s why Mr Martin Keown has been afforded time on talkSPORT – because he can give that very verdict.

The ex-Arsenal defender revealed the blisteringly obvious today…

Surely there’s more to be said about Solskjaer’s increasingly conservative tactics, the boardroom, the over-commercialisation of the club that has taken priority over football, the investors (one of whom needed elaboration on what a loan is), and the oh-so-revolting owners?

Rangers’ Dapo Mebude could make step up to first-team level

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In The Pipeline series, which takes a look at some of the most promising young talent either linked with clubs or emerging from their academies…

Dapo Mebude made his Rangers debut on the last day of the season against Kilmarnock in the 2-1 defeat, coming on for Daniel Candeais.

Now that the 18-year-old has tasted first-team football, what can fans expect in the future?

Well, if manager Steven Gerrard turns out to be right, supporters could be in for a treat.

Per Rangers TV via insidefutbol, he said: “I think he deserves that with his play for the 18s, the 19s, the reserves and what he’s shown in first-team training.

“Dapo’s got a bright future. He needs to keep working hard now and pushing and hopefully, that can be the first of many.”

Fellow academy graduate Ross McCrorie also believes that Mebude is the “one to watch” when asked by The Daily Record who he thinks will be next to make the step up.

He said: “Dapo Mebude is one to watch. He’s done well for the Scotland Under-17s, is very quick and has a few tricks. Dapo has a real chance if he keeps working hard.”

Mebude signed a new contract with the Ibrox club in December of 2018, committing his future to the club until 2021.

Their Head of Academy, Craig Mulholland, announced via the official Rangers website: “We are delighted to extend Dapo’s contract. He has made great progress in the last few years having been named in a first-team squad and playing up a year at international level”.

Mebude is a regular in the Scotland U19s with three goals in eight games and will be looking to make the step up over the next couple of seasons.

As Mebude himself said in a recent interview with The Evening Times, he is well aware of the quality of the players in front of him. Indeed, Jermain Defoe and Alfredo Morelos are both ahead of him in Gerrard’s pecking order.

He said: “They are two top-class strikers and Jermain has done everything I would want to do.

“He has scored goals and played in the Premier League and done it all. Alfredo is showing what he can do and they are both class strikers that I can learn from.”

A loan move in January could be the best option in the immediate future to see how he copes with the physicality of senior football on a regular basis.

He has already played in the Challenge Cup, scoring in a 2-1 win over Berwick Rangers, but it remains to be seen if he can hit the back of the net on a consistent basis for the first-team.

Man United’s Marcus Rashford could follow Raheem Sterling’s footsteps, say pundits

[ad_pod ]How does one describe Marcus Rashford? The Manchester United forward is gifted; more goals than Old Trafford favourite Cristiano Ronaldo at the same age would attest to that.ÂHowever, it just feels like something is missing from his game – a certain consistency that’s absolutely necessary for good players to make the transition into great players.ÂFor example, RashfordÂscoredÂtwo goals and added one assist in the opening two games of the current season. Since then, he’s failed to find the back of the net in two appearances and somehow looked bereft of confidence despite starting the campaign so brightly.Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

His record from the last term isn’t particularly inspirational either. Indeed, after an impressive flurry of six goals in eight Premier League outings, he went on a baron spree of just two goals in 14 games as United’s bid for Champions League football collapsed.

But this isn’t to say that he hasn’t got the ability to overcome the obstacles that stand in his way.

TalkSPORT’s Darren Gough has discussed what the future holds for Rashford and how he compares to international teammate Raheem Sterling…

Everton fans loved Yerry Mina’s dominant performance against Watford

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Everton fans have taken to Twitter to heap praise on Yerry Mina, following the narrow 1-0 win over Watford on Saturday.

The Colombia international has started both of the Toffees’ Premier League games so far this season and is yet to concede a goal, striking up an effective partnership with Michael Keane at the back having had to largely watch Kurt Zouma do that role last term.

The 6 foot 5 centre-back was in fine form against the Hornets at Goodison Park on Saturday, playing a crucial role in the 1-0 win.

Mina recorded an astounding eight clearances including six aerial duels, whilst he also completed two interceptions and two tackles – no wonder Watford couldn’t get past the Merseysiders.

The 24-year-old will be pleased to have put together back-to-back performances after struggling to do so last season due to a number of injury problems.

Celtic fans react to James Forrest’s goalscoring display against CFR Cluj

[ad_pod ]

James Forrest scored the pivotal away goal in Celtic’s 1-1 draw against CFR Cluj, and the fans are loving his performance.

The winger scored his side’s equaliser having watched Mario Rondon give the Romanians a lead in the Champions League third qualifying round tie.

Neil Lennon’s men will hope the away goal will help them get past Cluj next week at Parkhead, knowing that should they do so they’ll face Slavia Prague in the next round and guarantee European football for the club until at least Christmas.

Getting past Cluj would mean they’ll play in the group stages of one of the two European tournaments. Beat Slavia and it’s the Champions League, lose and it’s the Europa League.

Yet, they need to get there first and the fans know they’re more likely to be there thanks to Forrest’s goal. The supporters were full of praise for their 28-year-old star and his impactful display in Romania.

Here are some of the best reactions from Twitter…

Celtic pursuit of Husein Balic doesn’t bode well for Lewis Morgan

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Celtic are interested in signing Austrian U21 international Husein Balic this summer, as reported by The Daily Mail.

What’s the story?

The 23-year-old, who was eligible for the recent UEFA Under-21 Championship in Italy, is said by the paper to have impressed in the tournament and is now being tracked by Celtic and a number of English clubs.

The report states he is valued at around £700,000, currently in the final year of his contract at Austrian top-flight side St Polten.

Celtic fans aren’t happy about Arsenal’s bid for one of their key players…

What could it mean for others at Celtic?

The Austrian scored five goals and assisted five times in 34 appearances for St Polten last season, suggesting he could be a good attacking option for the Hoops next term. Celtic have recently signed Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo from the same division, so clearly feel it’s a useful scouting ground.

Balic plays on the left wing and so would be arriving into an already crowded position at the club, with Mikey Johnston, Scott Sinclair, Daniel Arzani and Lewis Morgan all vying for a spot in Neil Lennon’s first-team squad.

Of that group, Morgan looks like the odd man out, having only started once for the club since arriving from St Mirren last summer.

Brendan Rodgers sent him out on loan to Sunderland in the second half of last season but he couldn’t become a key member of the team there either, scoring just twice.

With Johnston getting plenty of action in pre-season, Sinclair consistently netting goals over the last three years and Arzani set to return from injury for the second year of his two-season loan deal, it leaves Morgan, who signed for Rodgers in January 2018, on the outside looking in.

A move for Balic would surely be the final blow and effectively end his Celtic career.
