Hatfield: Delaney would have been an exciting player for Villa

Denmark midfielder Thomas Delaney would have been an exciting player for Aston Villa, says Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield.

Delaney, who starred for the Euro 2020 semi-finalists, joined Sevilla from Borussia Dortmund in a €6m (£5m) deal last week but had been linked with a move to Villa Park prior.

According to French outlet Homme du Match (via Birmingham Live), Villa were preparing a bid as they looked to bring the 29-year-old to the Midlands.

For Hatfield, it would have been a good acquisition, though he feels it was always just paper talk.

Speaking to TT about Villa’s reported interest in Delaney, the football reporter said:

“I think that was a little bit of paper talk to be honest, probably agent led. He’s sealed a move to Sevilla now, but Delaney would have been an exciting player for Villa.

“I think a lot of Villa fans would have loved that because obviously it’s a big name coming from a big club.”

Villa do look a little light in that defensive midfield position, so an addition like Delaney certainly would have been great.

However, as long as they keep Marvelous Nakamba, who can come in for Douglas Luiz, they should be alright. The 27-year-old has been linked with a move away from the club this summer, with Premier League rivals Everton and Crystal Palace named as interested parties.

Gilchrist needs his head examined – Harbhajan

Harbhajan Singh has reacted angrily to the comments by Adam Gilchrist in his autobiography that he and Sourav Ganguly missed the 2004 Nagpur Test against Australia because of their reluctance to play on a grassy pitch. “It’s time somebody asked him to shut up,” Harbhajan told the Kolkata-based . “I suppose Gilchrist needs to get his head examined.”In his book Gilchrist questioned Harbhajan and Ganguly’s decision to skip the Test that gave the visitors their first series win in the country in 35 years. Ganguly, India’s captain during the 2004 series, pulled out on the morning of the Test complaining of pain in the groin, while Harbhajan missed the game after contracting flu.Gilchrist wrote Harbhajan was out of the Test “with a ‘flu’, which he seemed to have contracted when he saw the grassy wicket”. “…I still don’t know to this day what was wrong with Ganguly and Harbhajan.”He also slammed Harbhajan for his role in the Sydney Test for which he was charged on grounds of racial abuse against Andrew Symonds. Harbhajan was handed a three-match ban which was overturned on appeal.Harbhajan said Gilchrist should not be using fellow cricketers to sell his book. “I’m sure there are other ways to do that.” Gilchrist also questioned the evidence given by Sachin Tendulkar in the racism case against Harbhajan, labeling it a “joke”. Harbhajan had criticised him for his remarks on Tendulkar and said Gilchrist was himself not respected because of his on-field behaviour.

Watson wants Symonds in Test side

Shane Watson has backed Andrew Symonds to make his Test return on Thursday against New Zealand despite the fact that such a move could squeeze Watson out of the side. The two allrounders are in Australia’s 13-man squad and although there is the possibility that both will play, a direct swap of Symonds for Watson would be a more likely scenario.Watson was given his opportunity at No. 6 in India because Symonds was working through his rehabilitation process and was unavailable for selection. It was a reversal of the situation in the 2006-07 Ashes, when Symonds was only handed his chance because Watson, who had originally been selected, struggled with persistent hamstring injuries.Symonds made the most of his Test status and since that Ashes campaign he has averaged 72.07 in 12 Tests and has also chipped in for 14 wickets. Watson said Symonds had earned the right to be part of Australia’s starting line-up.”If Roy gets a spot, he bloody deserves it, he’s been a great player for a number of years,” Watson told the . “I wouldn’t feel hard done by, no way. I’m realistic of where I’m at. I’m still only 27, so I know I’ve got a lot of really good cricket in front of me.”Roy definitely deserves an opportunity whenever he’s ready to go. He’s performed so well in some tough times for Australia and you can’t take that away from him.”Watson would be unfortunate to miss out on this week’s Gabba Test after he performed solidly on the recent tour of India. But he is philosophical about his chances and, as his injuries during the Ashes and Symonds’ disciplinary breaches have proved, it is impossible to predict what opportunities will come along.”What happened to Roy on the Darwin tour gave me another opportunity to have a crack at Test cricket, so that’s the roundabouts of professional sport,” Watson said. “I used to worry about [selection] a lot when I was younger and probably put too much pressure on myself.”Now I’m just enjoying every minute of playing. Hopefully I get another opportunity. Whether it’s now or in a couple of years, who knows? I know if and when I do get another opportunity I’m going to give it everything I’ve got.”

Precisa?

West Ham fans flock to Plea claim

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have been left excited by a transfer claim involving Borussia Monchengladbach striker Alassane Plea.

The Frenchman, who has bagged a career total of 86 goals, has become another attacker linked with a move to the London Stadium as manager David Moyes aims to bolster his options.

West Ham’s boss has been trying to strengthen going forward as question marks hang over Michail Antonio’s fitness record, with the 31-year-old missing 13 games last season through injury (Transfermarkt).

It is believed that landing a new striker was among his top priorities for this summer alongside the acquisition of a centre-half and attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard (Claret & Hugh).

However, they so far haven’t landed any of the above, with goalkeeper Alphonse Areola being West Ham’s only major summer signing so far.

Now, L’Equipe du soir (via Nabil Djellit) have brought news on the striker chase with Plea now ‘in the sights’ of Moyes and West Ham.

Flocking to this claim as their club allegedly eye a move for the 28-year-old, many Irons supporters have been left excited by the prospect of potentially landing him.

One supporter even called this update ‘very promising’ as they eagerly look out for any updates on attacking additions.

Dammika Prasad added to Test squad

The Sri Lankan selectors have added Dammika Prasad, a right-arm fast-medium bowler to the squad for the second Test against India starting at Galle on Thursday.Selection committee sources said they need a quick bowler who can beat the bat quite often and it was with this in mind they had added the 25-year-old Prasad to the squad. Chaminda Vaas and Nuwan Kulasekara, the new-ball bowlers for the first Test, are among the slowest Sri Lanka have had in recent times. The two averaged between 120 and 125kph in Colombo and bowled only 30 overs in all in a Test dominated by the spinners. Vaas went wicketless for 50 runs and there were times his pace dipped to as low as 110 kph.Prasad impressed with his bowling in the three-day tour match with 4 for 58 against the Indians. He played three ODIs for Sri Lanka in 2006 and has taken 129 wickets in 41 first-class matches. However sources said if Vaas was left out of the XI, he would be replaced by left-arm fast bowler Thilan Thushara, who played in West Indies in April this year, and not Prasad.”We brought Prasad into the squad to get a closer look at him and keep him in the frame,” the source said. The first Test which Sri Lanka won so convincingly by an innings and 239 runs in four days was dominated by spinners Muthiah Muralitharan and debutant Ajantha Mendis who between them took 19 wickets.Sri Lanka squad: Michael Vandort, Malinda Warnapura, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene (capt), Thilan Samaraweera, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Prasanna Jayawardene, Chaminda Vaas, Muttiah Muralitharan, Ajantha Mendis, Nuwan Kulasekera, Chamara Silva, Thilan Thushara, Chamara Kapugedera, Dammika Prasad.

Win or perish for Delhi Daredevils

The Big Picture

With the IPL moving towards the last leg of league games, things are more desperate for Delhi Daredevils than they are for Mumbai Indians. A defeat will send Delhi hurtling out of the tournament, but a victory for them will suddenly put the pressure back on Mumbai, who will then need to win both their remaining matches to make it to the semi-finals.The two teams have had contrasting journeys so far: Delhi began in style, winning four of their first five games, but have since gone off the boil, winning just two of the last eight. Mumbai, on the other hand, made a disastrous start, losing their first four matches, but then won six in a row and were just two runs away from seven successive victories. Both teams have a top-heavy batting line-ups and one outstanding new-ball bowler, and how Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya and Shaun Pollock match up against Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag and Glenn McGrath could well decide which way the match turns. Mumbai’s support cast, though, has contributed more consistently – Dhawal Kulkarni, Ashish Nehra and the now-absent Dwayne Bravo have been among the wickets, while Abhishek Nayar and Robin Uthappa have contributed useful runs. Delhi have the big names in their middle order – AB de Villiers and Tillakaratne Dilshan are both free-stroking batsmen – but neither has found his range in the IPL.To make matters more uncertain for both teams, the unseasonal Delhi rains threaten to disrupt the action, with forecasts for more showers on Saturday. A washout will mean Mumbai will only need to win one of their last two games to push Delhi out of contention.

Tournament position

Delhi Daredevils: P13, W6, L6, NR1, NRR +0.350
Mumbai Indians: P11, W6, L5, NRR +0.663

Form (last five completed matches, most recent first)

Delhi Daredevils: WLWLL
Mumbai Indians: LWWWW

Watch out for …

  • The first five overs of both innings, which will pit two of the canniest and most experienced new-ball bowlers against two heavyweight batting pairs.
  • Rain – the forecast suggests possible thundershowers on Saturday.

    Team news

Mumbai’s batting is fairly settled, but on a small ground and in conditions which might remain wet, there’s little chance of them persisting with two spinners – Vikrant Yeligati and Siddharth Chitnis, both offspinners, leaked runs in their previous game against Punjab. Dominic Thornely’s medium-pace could come in handy in these conditions, while Dhawal Kulkarni should return. If Thornely plays, Dwayne Smith could miss out despite a reasonably impressive IPL debut against Punjab.Mumbai Indians (probable): 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Sachin Tendulkar (capt), 3 Robin Uthappa, 4 Abhishek Nayar, 5 Dominic Thornely, 6 Gaurav Dhiman, 7 Shaun Pollock, 8 Pinal Shah (wk), 9 Dilhara Fernando, 10 Ashish Nehra, 11 Dhawal Kulkarni.Delhi’s middle order has been a worry throughout the tournament, but they’re unlikely to tinker too much with the line-up. Their bowlers set up the victory against the Bangalore Royal Challengers in their previous match, and the only disappointment was Rajat Bhatia, who could face the axe for this key clash.Delhi Daredevils (probable): 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag (capt), 3 Shikhar Dhawan, 4 Manoj Tiwary, 5 AB de Villiers, 6 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 7 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 8 Farveez Maharoof, 9 Amit Mishra, 10 Pradeep Sangwan, 11 Glenn McGrath.

    Stats and trivia

  • Gambhir, Sehwag and Shikhar Dhawan have scored 1197 out of 1744 bat runs scored by Delhi, which works out to almost 69%.
  • Delhi have been the superior batting team in the middle overs, scoring at an average of 39.13 runs per wicket, and 8.44 per over, between overs seven and 15. For Mumbai the corresponding numbers are 29.95 and 7.75.
  • McGrath has dismissed the Mumbai openers 25 times in international cricket: Tendulkar has fallen to him 13 times and Jayasuriya 12.
  • McGrath and Pollock have stunningly similar stats in the tournament so far: McGrath has 12 wickets in as many games at an average of 23.33 and an economy rate of 6.08. Pollock has 11 wickets in ten games at an average of 19.90 and an economy rate of 6.25.

    Quotes

“I think the experience factor was lacking in the top order and Shaun and Sanath had too much responsibility on their shoulders. Now that I’m back, the responsibility got shared among us.”
“Playing with Sehwag has always been a great experience as he takes the pressure off me. We both are stroke players and when we go out to open the innings we have just one thing in mind, to give a good start, and that’s what we have tried to do right through the tournament.”

Bruno Silva marca duas vezes, e Botafogo goleia a Portuguesa

No segundo tempo, o Botafogo conseguiu ampliar a vantagem rapidamente.

A Portuguesa estava praticamente neutralizada.
