Man Utd told to sell de Gea this summer

Former Manchester United man Keith Gillespie has told Football FanCast that the club can afford to sell David de Gea this summer.

De Gea has been with United since 2011 and has gone on to make 434 appearances for the club.

However, this season, he has lost his place after a period of absence, with Dean Henderson playing in the last three top-flight games.

Henderson spent last season on loan at Sheffield United, enjoying an exceptional season, and has even won a cap for England.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has utilised the 24-year-old in various cup competitions, playing in the FA Cup, the League Cup, and the Europa League.

Gillespie believes Henderson is good enough to step into de Gea’s shoes and believes that, as a result, United can cash in on the Spain international this summer.

He has been linked with a move away, with The Sun claiming earlier this month that PSG could make a summer swoop.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, Gillespie said: “De Gea has been fantastic for the period that he’s been there, I think now would probably be a good time to cash in and let him go.

“You have got somebody waiting to come in there, somebody who’s playing now, in Henderson. He did fantastically well last year at Sheffield United. He’s biding his time and when he has had to play, he’s done really well.

“He’s a young English goalkeeper, he could force his way in and be England number one if he gets that regular starting place at Man United.”

De Gea has enjoyed a storied career at Old Trafford, winning the Premier League, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Europa League, while he has also been voted the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year four times during his United career.

He added: “David de Gea has been fantastic and I think four out of five seasons he won Man United’s Player of the Year, but that shows you how much work he had to do.

“That’s not something that would have happened under Alex Ferguson!”

Leeds: Phil Hay provides Hernandez update

Leeds United playmaker Pablo Hernandez was not involved in the matchday squad for the game against West Ham United on Monday night and Phil Hay has revealed why this was the case.

The latest on Hernandez

The Athletic journalist spoke to Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa and confirmed via Twitter that “Hernandez has another muscle problem”

This isn’t the biggest blow for Leeds

Last season saw the Leeds faithful fall in love with Hernandez, who Hay championed as ‘unreal’ and a ‘demon’ on Twitter after he scored a crucial late winner against Swansea in the promotion run-in, part of a successful campaign in which he scored nine goals and set up another nine.

However, this season has told a very different story for the 35 year-old, who has suffered a few injuries and was even the subject of speculation over a potential Elland Road exit. Bielsa has only started him twice and subbed him on 11 times in the Premier League this term (Transfermarkt).

It looks like his best years could be behind him, but it will be a slight blow if Leeds don’t have his creative threat to come off the bench should they need one desperately in upcoming games.

LFC fans react after Trent is dropped

A number of Liverpool fans have been reacting to the shock news that Trent Alexander-Arnold has been dropped by England manager Gareth Southgate.

The 22-year-old has emerged as one of the Reds’ most exciting young players in years, becoming a key part of the Jurgen Klopp revolution at Anfield.

Having spent many years in Liverpool’s academy, Alexander-Arnold gradually emerged with Klopp at the helm and is now widely considered one of Europe’s best right-backs.

He is the youngest player in history to start back-to-back Champions League finals, further highlighting the incredible strides he has made.

Alexander-Arnold has also become a fixture for England in recent years, winning 12 caps along the way and also scoring once for good measure.

Southgate has axed him from his Three Lions squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers, however, with Kyle Walker and Kieran Tripper preferred at right-back.

The England boss claims Alexander-Arnold’s form has not been up to scratch this season, but his omission certainly feels harsh – the likes of Trippier, Walker and even Eric Dier haven’t exactly been setting the world alight.

From a Liverpool perspective, it is no bad thing, allowing the boyhood Reds supporter to recharge his batteries, but it will undoubtedly be a personal blow.

“Walker and Trippier haven’t been better than Trent this season. Ridiculous decision from Southgate, he’s out of his depth.”

“Good news for Liverpool but England is the only footballing nation in the world who wouldn’t recognise Trent as England’s first choice right back. If he was Spanish, Italian, French etc…”

“Gutted for him but delighted at the same time. Just shows how out his depth Southgate really is”

“Great news for us, but Southgate really is clueless. Dropping Trent despite his form being good recently but recalling Lingard for a few decent games after 2 years of rubbish and retaining Dier who is bang average”

“My impression is that Trent is unorthodox good and lesser coaches like Southgate don’t know how to fit him in. Comfortably England’s best RB, but you won’t hear any Liverpool fan whine about his exclusion”

Palace Predicted XI vs Burnley

Crystal Palace play host to Burnley on Saturday looking to get back to winning ways in the Premier League after the 2-0 defeat to Leeds United on Monday night.

However, Roy Hodgson will be without at least seven players for the Eagles’ game against Burnley, including chief talisman Wilfried Zaha, which may throw a spanner in the works.

Zaha has been in superb form for Palace so far this season but he was forced off in last week’s 2-1 win at Newcastle United, limping off the pitch after suffering a hamstring injury and subsequently missed the defeat to Leeds.

Hodgson could make as many as four changes for this afternoon, and with that in mind, here is Football FanCast’s predicted starting XI.

Vicente Guaita is once again expected to start in goal ahead of Jack Butland as has become the norm.

Palace could make a couple of changes in defence with Patrick van Aanholt dropping back to left-back. Tyrick Mitchell has played a lot of football lately but struggled against Leeds so he could be given a rest against Burnley today.

Cheikhou Kouyate is also back in contention after being left on the bench for the trip to Elland Road. The 31-year-old could replace Scott Dann in the middle of the back four with Gary Cahill keeping his place while Nathaniel Clyne will once again start at right-back.

Club captain Luka Milivojevic offered little against Leeds, so switching Eberechi Eze to the left and bringing Andros Townsend in on the right shoulder of Jairo Riedewald should be a tempting option for Hodgson.

Upfront, things get a little more interesting, as new signing Jean-Philippe Mateta could be in contention with Christian Benteke still seeking to replicate the form that saw him score 17 goals in his first season at Selhurst Park, but the big Belgian is Hodgson’s trusted man for the big occasion.

Michy Batshuayi will form the rest of the strikeforce ahead of Jordan Ayew in the absence of the injured Zaha, having come off the bench to replace Mateta in the second half against Leeds.

Ancelotti facing “impossible” Richarlison task ahead of Everton’s Sheffield Utd trip

Carlo Ancelotti is facing the “impossible” task of finding a like-for-like replacement for Richarlison with Everton potentially without the Brazilian at Sheffield United on Boxing Day.

According to The Guardian, the Goodison Park natives are waiting anxiously for word on whether or not Richarlison can take to the field at Bramall Lane on Saturday night as he continues to be assessed for a potential concussion.

The 23-year-old was substituted off during the Toffees’ Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat to Manchester United on Wednesday night under the orders of the club’s doctor, having received an elbow to the head in an accidental collision with Eric Bailly.

Ancelotti has insisted Everton will not breach the Football Association’s concussion protocols and field Richarlison regardless, after he claimed “everything is fine” in a message shared on Twitter.

Everton will be hoping Richarlison can feature at Bramall Lane as they strive to secure a fourth-straight Premier League victory to maintain the club’s position in the top-four places, as the Toffees are yet to win a top-flight fixture without the Brazilian since his arrival in 2018.

Ancelotti will also be without James Rodriguez after confirming the Colombian will miss the festive meetings with Sheffield United and Manchester City with the same calf injury that has sidelined the 29-year-old for the Blues’ last three league games.

“Without Richarlison, we know it will be difficult,” Ancelotti said. “If he had a concussion he has to stay out, we have to follow the protocols, and we have to be able to replace him better than what we did when he was not here.

“James will not be available for the next few games and it is a challenge for us to replace them both.”

Everton lost all three Premier League fixtures while without Richarlison earlier in the season following his red card at home to Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby, during which Ancelotti admitted it is “impossible” to find a like-for-like replacement for the 23-year-old with who he already has at the club.

Ancelotti will be keen to see Everton avoid a repeat of their struggles while Richarlison was suspended should he not be able to feature against Sheffield United on Boxing Day, knowing the £50m record signing accounts for much of the Toffees’ offensive advances.

No Everton player has registered a higher number of successful dribbles than Richarlison (32), who ranks second to Dominic Calvert-Lewin (39) for total shots (24) in Premier League fixtures and third for big chances created (3), per SofaScore.

Only Calvert-Lewin (11) and Rodriguez (3) have scored more often than Richarlison (2), too, with fellow forwards Alex Iwobi, Anthony Gordon and Cenk Tosun yet to find the back of the net.

AND in other news, Marcel Brands will have to ditch his favoured Everton approach to sign a sought-after £18m enforcer.

Four changes by Guardiola as Foden is benched; Predicted Man City XI vs Burnley

After securing a place in the Champions League knockout stages in midweek with a win against Olympiakos, Manchester City return to Premier League action on Saturday afternoon, as they face Burnley at the Etihad.

A goal from Phil Foden proved to be the difference in Greece but with Kevin De Bruyne set to return to the starting eleven after not travelling in midweek, the English midfielder may miss out against Sean Dyche’s side.

The Clarets secured their first win of the Premier League season last time out with a 1-0 triumph against Crystal Palace so will be buoyed ahead of their trip to Manchester, and they certainly won’t make it easy for the Citizens.

Here’s how Football FanCast expects Guardiola to line up his side against Burnley, with the Spaniard making four changes…

Ederson unsurprisingly keeps his place in goal, whilst Kyle Walker will also more than likely return to the starting 11 after he also didn’t travel in midweek.

Despite an impressive display from John Stones, Aymeric Laporte will probably return at centre-back to continue his recent strong partnership with Ruben Dias.

Although it was a decent returning game from Benjamin Mendy after his latest injury, Joao Cancelo will probably switch back to left-back for the game against Burnley.

There’s one change in midfield as De Bruyne replaces Foden, as although the 20-year-old was extremely impressive against Olympiakos, the game against Burnley will be much more of a physical battle in midfield, so he may be the one axed in place of De Bruyne.

However, he could still make an impact from the bench, as he did earlier in the season against West Ham, which led to Joe Cole praising him following the game, with the pundit saying:

“You can see he’s got a hunger to score and it was an outstanding goal.

“He looked like the best player when he came on the pitch. You look at the amount of money spent on some of the players out there and that’s a young Englishman.

“He’s an outstanding talent and after today Pep (Guardiola) will look at him with a different light because he changed the game.” (per Daily Mail)

Meanwhile, Ferran Torres should return to the starting line-up on the right-hand side, in place of the out-of-form Bernardo Silva, whilst Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus will more than likely complete the attack, although they will want to put their missed chances in midweek behind them.

Guardiola’s side are in desperate need of three points, as they currently sit 14th in the Premier League table, so nothing but maximum points from this game will be acceptable if they have title aspirations for this season.

And, in other news… Manchester City must complete signing of £63m-rated “complete” striker loved by Messi

Marcelo Bielsa needs to be ruthless over Leeds star Pablo Hernandez

Leeds United will be looking to bounce back from Monday night’s embarrassment this weekend as they head to south-west London to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side sit in a very respectable 12th place in what is their first top-flight campaign in over 16 years.

Some of their performances have been wholly impressive, shocking Liverpool on the opening day – even despite losing – and drawing to Manchester City too.

Although, their 4-1 thrashing by Leicester City shows they are far from the complete article under the obsessed Argentinian tactician.

He has plenty to consider going into Saturday’s game – will anyone be dropped as a consequence of the shocking defeat? can anyone return to the starting XI?

Perhaps the biggest call will be surrounding his veteran playmaker Pablo Hernandez, who was visibly furious with his early withdrawal at Elland Road earlier this week.

The TV cameras spotted him throwing his armband into the empty stands, muttering something to himself before kicking a loose water bottle, all behind Bielsa’s back with his manager intensely focused on the match.

It’s not the first time it has happened either, think back to the Barnsley win.

According to The Athletic’s Phil Hay, United will still be without Rodrigo, which means the long-serving Spaniard is in line to start once again.

But he shouldn’t.

Hernandez has struggled in the Premier League thus far and at 35, he’s no spring chicken. In fact, he has completed the full 90 just once since the first UK lockdown but that didn’t stop him from playing like a “demon” in the eyes of Hay.

The man, who has registered at least eight assists for the Yorkshire giants in each of his last four campaigns, is yet to manage a single ‘big chance created’ in the top-flight.

On his day, the £23.5k-per-week star is the beating metronome of this Leeds side – an unplayable and supremely intelligent creator, or as Darren Bent told Sky Sports (via HITC), he offers the “X factor” and “something special.”

But those have been far and few between at this level.

It is Rodrigo who has proven to be the more creative outlet, managing one key pass and 2.2 shots per game, numbers vastly above that of Hernandez, as per WhoScored.

Whether it’s Tyler Roberts, Ian Poveda or one of the other wingers playing centrally, Bielsa ought to axe Hernandez for the Palace game.
