Everton: Romano drops Vitor Pereira update

Fabrizio Romano has delivered an update on Everton’s pursuit of a new manager, with Vitor Pereira “still in England” amid his potential appointment at Goodison Park.

What’s the story?

The Toffees and Farhad Moshiri finally brought an end to Rafa Benitez’s disappointing time on Merseyside earlier this month, and Romano has now revealed that Pereira is keen on taking over from the Spaniard.

Writing on Twitter, he said: “Portuguese manager Vitor Pereira is still in England together with his staff members. He hopes to join Everton as new head coach – but still waiting for club final decision. #EFC Pereira would be prepared to accept 6 month deal with option for one more season – time to wait.”

Fans will be fuming

Currently lying in 16th in the Premier League table and only four points above the drop, Everton are firmly in the battle to avoid relegation this season from the top-flight.

The Toffees’ disastrous run under Benitez has seen them free-fall down the table, to the point where they are now seriously having to look behind their shoulders at some of the teams below them – not least a cash-rich Newcastle United, and a Burnley side who have a number of games in hand on their nearest rivals.

What they certainly don’t need now is an appointment fraught with risk, and that’s exactly what Pereira is.

The Portuguese boss has had the journeyman’s equivalent of a managerial career, going through seven different clubs across the entire world in the span of just ten years.

None of those of course have seen him lead a side in England, and given the perilous position Everton currently find themselves in, doesn’t exactly provide reassurances to Toffees fans that he has the know-how to dig them out of trouble.

Moshiri has already blundered several times when it comes to appointing a new boss, with his latest gaffe being Benitez. Handing the reins to a completely new face in Pereira, mid-way through the season where he has no pre-season to work with the players, and the pressure is already ramped up cause of the league table, seems like a disaster waiting to happen.

Everton fans will surely be fuming with Romano’s managerial update.

Meanwhile, Moshiri should look to hire this man…

Middlesex drop Yuvraj from Twenty20 plans

Middlesex have decided against bringing Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh on board for their Twenty20 Cup campaign, despite having a signed contract from him, after failing to receive written approval from the BCCI. The decision to drop Yuvraj from this summer’s plans was made after it was clear that the batsman’s international commitments would make him unavailable for the majority of the tournament.”We had received a signed contract from Yuvraj confirming that he was playing for us, we had received full approval from his agent as to the terms of our agreement with Yuvraj, we had received full approval from a prominent member of the BCCI as to Yuvraj’s signing,” Vinny Codrington, Middlesex’s chief executive, wrote on the county’s website. “And we had even agreed what squad number he would be sporting for the Panthers this year and what name he would be wearing on his back.”However, the county then received notification from the Indian board about the Asia Cup, scheduled to be held in June, as well as a training camp ahead of the tournament. It also learnt, through the media, of a tri-series involving India, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe between May 28 and June 13 in Zimbabwe.”Calls to the BCCI to seek clarification on this point have proved fruitless, however we have since been advised that Yuvraj will be required to represent India in this tournament … leading to us make the decision to notify Yuvraj Singh’s representatives that we will not be pursuing our interest in bringing him to Lord’s,” Codrington added.Middlesex have already recruited former Australia wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist as their other specialist Twenty20 overseas player for the season.

Smith looks to recapture past heights

The next five days will give an indication of whether South Africa can recapture the form that took them to the top of the world rankings. A draw against England, who they were expected to dominate, will still be an underachievement but at least victory at the Wanderers would lift spirits ahead of a tough trip to India, the team who took their No. 1 crown.South Africa’s loss of form since they beat Australia down under has meant Graeme Smith has frequently had to respond to questions about his team’s position. Each time he has defended his players and believes they have it in them to reach those levels again. Although he didn’t say it, the hosts are still actually trying to work out how they are behind in what Smith termed “an epic series.””It’s fair to say we haven’t reached those heights,” he said. “When teams are so close it’s often the little things that matter in the big series and in the past we won those moments, but in this series we haven’t. It’s been a touch disappointing but we have played some good cricket. Tomorrow we have the chance to start retaining the trophy if we play well. That’s the goal for us.”In two out of three Tests we have come close, we have just lacked the final blow on the last day. You have to give credit to England’s resilience that they have shown; when they’ve been put under pressure they have handled it well. We’ve had good chats about taking us to another level and we haven’t really hit those heights after 2008. But the potential is still there and we need to find a way of hitting that point.”Smith wouldn’t concede that it had been mentally frailties or the pressure of playing at home which has seen South Africa pull up short of the winning line in recent matches and said it was down to the players to dig deeper. “We need to find a way to extract a bit more out of the players to enable the team to reach its potential.”Regardless of the outcome in Johannesburg this has been another South Africa-England contest that has enthralled throughout. Since readmission there hasn’t been a dull series between the two teams and England’s battling qualities have come as no surprise to Smith, even though the home side were very bullish before the tour began.”I’ve never played against England in an easy series,” he said. “Hanging on for two nine-down draws has made an epic series in many ways and people have really enjoyed watching.”It’s been great to be a part of it and we want our bit of victory in the next five days. It’s been great for cricket and having competitive teams play against each other really brings out the best in people.”While England have had the luxury of being able to name an unchanged team throughout – something that is set to continue for the final Test – South Africa have had injury problems this season. The latest is the loss of Friedel de Wet to a long-term back injury which means Wayne Parnell, the left-arm quick, is set for his debut.Parnell has already impressed during his one-day and Twenty20 appearances and some South African commentators believe he should have started this series while Robert Key, who captained him during a stint with Kent, has said he could become the new Wasim Akram. However, Smith was quick to calm the expectations over his raw quick.”He’s pretty inexperienced at first-class level so it will be interesting to see how he goes,” he said. “He’s had a taste of international cricket in the shorter format and maybe his youthful exuberance is something he can bring. It will be a big challenge for him and the expectation shouldn’t be that he will walk in and knock over seven tomorrow.”The home team have been at pains to point out they will play an attacking brand of cricket as they aim to save the series, but Smith doesn’t want them to get carried away. “I disagree with the terms like gamble that have been thrown around, it is about getting your basics right,” he said. “A good, positive mindset is crucial and we’ve spoken long and hard about that. The guys are really motivated.”

Galetti drops Traore to Spurs claim

Taking to Twitter, Sportitalia TV reporter Rudy Galetti has dropped a promising Tottenham Hotspur transfer update involving Wolverhampton Wanderers star Adama Traore.

The Lowdown: Lilywhites eye Traore move…

According to numerous reliable sources, Tottenham manager Antonio Conte and transfer chief Fabio Paratici are eager to sign the Spaniard and have placed him on the club’s wish list.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, reliable reporter John Percy of The Telegraph says that Spurs are ‘weighing up’ a move for Traore this month while another good source in Fabrizio Romano backs the Lilywhites’ interest.

According to the Italian transfer guru, speaking on Chris Cowlin’s YouTube channel recently (via The Express), Wolves’ forward is ‘super-appreciated’ by both Conte and Paratici.

Sharing the latest on Traore, Galetti has dropped a promising update on social media.

The Latest: Galetti makes Twitter claim…

Taking to Twitter, the Sportitalia TV journalist claims that the 25-year-old is a top target for Conte and Wolves could now sell for just €20 million (£16.6m).

“Adama Traore continues to be on the Antonio Conte preferred list. Wolves could let him go for around €20M,” he stated.

“West Ham are also closely following the situation of the right-winger. Evolving situation.”

The Verdict: Should Paratici move?

A direct winger possessing real pace and threat, Traore’s versatility means he can also be deployed across the midfield and further forward.

His stats are also very impressive with the attacker averaging a brilliant 4.5 completed dribbles per 90 in the Premier League over his ten starts this season – almost double that of Lucas Moura, who holds Spurs’ highest amount of successful take-ons (WhoScored).

Former Lilywhites boss Nuno Espirito Santo knows all about Traore, having coached him at Molineux, with the Portuguese raving over his ‘very special’ and ‘unique’ player last year (Express & Star).

Amid Conte’s personal search for a right-wing back, Traore could come as a surprise option for that position too given he has played in that position.

Still fairly young, if Spurs can indeed sign him for just £16.6m, they would have very little to lose.

A test of the one-day format's popularity

If India and Australia can sufficiently engage the crowds over the next three weeks, a fresh debate on the feasibility of ODIs will need to be started

Sidharth Monga24-Oct-2009

Sachin Tendulkar will complete 20 years on the international circuit during the series against Australia•Associated Press

One-day international cricket in India is an anomaly. While the world – including players like Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar – seems sated with the 50-over game, especially with meaningless seven-match bilateral series, the upcoming contest between India and Australia is likely to be received well by the home audience. Three-odd commercials squeezed in after each over works well for the broadcasters, international cricket in smaller centres works well for the public there.Over the next three weeks, though, we will know if times are changing in India as they are in the rest of the world. The Champions League Twenty20, with its largely thin crowds, will have just finished when the two top-ranked teams start their series – only ODIs, no Tests nor Twenty20s. Three Australian players, representing New South Wales in the Champions League, will reach Vadodara on Saturday afternoon, having finished their final late Friday night and travelled about 1100 km north-west, and start a match at 9.00 am on Sunday. That could have been the fate of three more Australians, had Victoria won their semi-final, or of a couple of Indians had one of the IPL teams made it that far. It’s not just the players, of course, who are threatened by fatigue. Will cricket’s biggest and most consistent market show signs it has had enough? Will the seemingly insatiable public turn its back on a calendar fast becoming a blur? If so, it will never have been more justified in its reaction given the manner in which one tournament now merges seamlessly into another without a thought for the importance some of them deserve. It’s a disturbing backdrop to a series that is effectively a tussle for top spot on the ICC rankings – especially when the two sides have spent the last two years playing hard, exciting cricket while building up a keen rivalry. When Australia came to India for four Tests last year there was both time and previous for the fans to slowly build up to the series. Then again the Indian cricket fan is a confounding creature: Mohali and Nagpur drew abysmal crowds and Delhi’s public turned up only when it was clear they would be witnessing Anil Kumble’s farewell. Perhaps the build-up doesn’t matter here, but it could be tempting fate to start a seven-match contest 33 hours after the Champions League ends.Surely, though, this will not mirror the drab series Australia went through in England. Surely, once the matches start, sub-plots will emerge. Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson and Peter Siddle will bowl bouncers to Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli. Harbhajan Singh, up against his favourite opponents, will look for redemption after a poor personal Champions Trophy – itself an aberration for a bowler much improved after Anil Kumble’s retirement. Ishant Sharma, who tormented Ricky Ponting enough to find a mention in his book as one of the more exciting contests he has been through, will now be targeted and will have to show what stuff he is made of. He is struggling in the shorter versions, he is low on confidence, and he doesn’t have a bowling coach.Shaun Marsh, after that blockbuster IPL and the subsequent injury, will get a decent run in national colours•Getty Images

Shaun Marsh, after that blockbuster IPL and the subsequent injury, will get a decent run in national colours, an opportunity rightfully his after Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist retired. Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh will make their comebacks, and that is as good a reason as any to watch the games. Shane Watson again is on the verge of realising his true potential at international level. At some time during the series, Sachin Tendulkar will finish 20 years in international cricket. Amid all that, what fun it would be if the unheralded players – Doug Bollinger, Ben Hilfenhaus, Jon Holland, Sudeep Tyagi – prove to be the difference. It helps that there are no favourites going into the series. India’s batting looks much better with Sehwag and Yuvraj back, and the familiar lower pitches on offer. The fast bowling, in Zaheer Khan’s absence, will be scrutinised again; the fielding will remain the area that Australia will look to capitalise on.Michael Clarke’s absence will mean Ponting and Michael Hussey will have extra responsibility in the middle order. That apart, Australia will seek a continuation of their ODI turnaround after the losses to South Africa home and away. They have now beaten Pakistan and England in bilateral series and have defended their Champions Trophy undefeated, winning 14 out of their last 17 matches. But the conditions will test them and the Indian batsmen will be the toughest to contain among their recent opposition. Both teams, in different ways, are in transitional phases. Both teams can claim to have been the best ODI team over the past two years. If they can sufficiently engage the crowds over the next three weeks, despite the overdose of cricket that precedes it, a fresh debate on the feasibility of ODIs will need to be started.
