SA call-up better than IPL contract – Hendricks

Beuran Hendricks, the Cobras left-arm seamer, has called his selection to South Africa’s Twenty20 squad as “better than an IPL contract.” Hendricks received his maiden call-up to the national side in that will play three matches against Australia next month and travel to the World T20 in Bangladesh and his excitement knew no bounds.”I have been dreaming of playing for South Africa since I was nine years old, it’s even more special because it’s a World Cup year and I will cherish this forever,” he said. It’s been a busy month for Hendricks, who also secured a deal with the Kings XI Punjab. But he said putting on the green and gold trumps that. “It’s even better than an IPL contract. I have been waiting for this since I started playing cricket.”Hendricks was picked on the back of an impressive domestic T20 campaign in which he claimed 28 scalps at an average of 10.28 to lead the wicket-taking charts. His hangman qualities were at their best at the death, an area South Africa have struggled in in the recent past.Having played in the South African set-up for the first time last year, Hendricks is surprised by how quickly he has risen. “Sometimes when I look back at the 28 wickets I got, I ask myself how on earth I managed to get there,” he said. “I think it was important to keep it simple and to keep calm.”But he has had guidance from a suitable source. Charl Langeveldt, who was also known for his ability to tie an end up and burgle wickets as a result, has helped Hendricks hone his trade. “I worked with Charl on my sills, adapting to pressure and sticking to the basics.”Hendricks also has the expertise of Vincent Barnes, former South Africa bowling coach and current High Performance Coach, to thank for his swift rise. “Vincent and Charl have been always been there for me. They have always tried to make sure I am on top of my game.”Hendricks will be the third left-arm seamer in South Africa’s T20 squad, joining Wayne Parnell and Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club clinched a berth in the Dhaka Premier League’s second phase, comfortably beating Brothers Union by 70 runs in their rematch in Mirpur. Half-centuries from Jahurul Islam, Steven Crook and Elton Chigumbura took Dhanmondi to 282 for 7. Brothers Union then crumbled from 112 for 2 in the 25th over to be bowled out for 212.Dhanmondi join Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club, Kalabagan Cricket Academy, Gazi Tank Cricketers, Prime Bank Cricket Club and Mohammedan Sporting Club in the second phase, with Brothers Union missing out. Brothers Union had beaten Dhanmondi by six wickets on November 9. However, BCB’s disciplinary committee ordered the rematch after Dhanmondi protested the participation of the suspended Suhrawadi Shuvo during that game. Shuvo led Brothers Union in the match and claimed 3 for 29 from ten overs. In the rematch, Dhanmondi started disastrously, getting reduced to 10 for 2 after choosing to bat. Opener Jahurul and captain Mushfiqur Rahim steadied the innings before the latter fell for 43. The next two batsmen, Crook and Chigumbura, made fifties at more than a run a ball as Dhanmondi picked up pace. Abdur Razzak provided a late flourish, caning an unbeaten 39 off 18. Alok Kapali was the most successful bowler for Brothers Union, ending with 3 for 34 from eight overs.Nafees Iqbal then put on 50 and 56 for the second and third wickets, the latter stand coming in the company of his captain Kapali. Elias Sunny dismissed Nafees for 62 and Brothers Union lost wickets regularly after that. Sean Williams was run out by his countryman Chigumbura for 9. Kapali became the first of Razzak’s three victims after making 45. Sean Ervine was the third, his exit in the 47th over sealing a big win for Dhanmondi.

Players 'too scared' under Arthur – Ponting

Ricky Ponting believes Australia’s new coach Darren Lehmann will bring calm to the squad and instil the players with confidence after they appeared “too scared” under Mickey Arthur. Lehmann has now spent three days in charge of the squad after the surprise sacking of Arthur on Monday and he has less than two weeks to prepare the Australians for the first Investec Ashes Test, which begins at Trent Bridge on July 10.The first opportunity for the batsmen under Lehmann’s mentorship will come in Taunton on Thursday, when the Australians bat against Somerset in their ongoing tour match, and men like Phillip Hughes and Shane Watson will be desperate for big runs after struggling on the previous Test tour of India. Writing in the on Thursday, Ponting said it appeared as an outside observer that the pressure on the players had become too great under Arthur.”The bottom line for me is that maybe the players had been put under too much pressure by the previous regime and that pressure needs to be released now,” Ponting wrote. “It’s hard to judge from afar but they seem to have been too scared to play the way they can. It’s not a question of trying to live up to the great names of Australia’s past, it’s a question of the current group playing as well as they can.”Ponting played under Arthur for a year before his Test retirement in December and he has now spent seven months away from international cricket, watching as the Australians struggled in India and the Champions Trophy. He said that if a change of coach had to be made then there was no point waiting until after the series, and he believed that Lehmann would bring a sense of fun to the group.”‘Boof’ has had a lot of success as a coach and even though I have never played under him I know exactly what he’ll be like around the Australia team,” Ponting wrote. “He will bring calmness to the group, make sure they try to have fun and enjoy the experience of playing for Australia. Above all, he will instil confidence into the young guys in the team who seem to be lacking it at the moment.”Will this decision affect the outcome of the Ashes? Well, only time will tell. Australia could have won the first Test under Mickey Arthur and equally they could win it under Darren Lehmann. What I do know is that they need to be aggressive and take England on now. They will under Boof.”Ponting said it was his belief that Arthur’s axing was the result mostly of Australia’s on-field struggles over the past few months, although the off-field turmoil – the homework saga in India and David Warner’s punch at Joe Root in England – had not helped. Ponting said he did not believe there was anything more Arthur could have done to prevent the Warner incident occurring, and he said the players needed to take some responsibility for the on-field failures as well.”Everybody involved has to take responsibility for this and that includes the players,” Ponting said. “There is only so much the coach can do. Once the players step over that line it is down to them and our displays clearly haven’t been up to scratch.”

New Zealand aim for overseas whitewash

ESPNcricinfo previews the third ODI at Trent Bridge as New Zealand aim for rare whitewash

The Preview by Alex Winter04-Jun-2013Match FactsJune 5, 2013, Trent Bridge
Start time 2pm (1300 GMT)Martin Guptill was pumeller-in-chief at the Ageas Bowl•Getty ImagesThe Big PictureWe knew New Zealand were a more competitive side in one-day cricket than in Tests but few would have gambled on the tourists having the series wrapped up with a match to play. The net result is New Zealand’s stock has risen significantly and England’s odds for the Champions Trophy are lengthening.Alastair Cook is facing his first crisis as one-day captain, largely caused by injuries to Steven Finn and Stuart Broad. To call Jade Dernbach and Chris Woakes suitable replacements is generous. Dernbach has surely proved his isn’t currently an international bowler and Woakes has failed to perform as many thought he might.England are now at a crossroads with their bowling attack. They can stick with their seam-bowling plan and bring Boyd Rankin in and hope they have either Broad or Finn fit, or they change tack and utilise James Tredwell as a second spinner and Ravi Bopara to take pace off the ball. They must be mindful of likely conditions for the Champions Trophy when picking their side for the third ODI.Their batting line-up was a little keen at the Ageas Bowl and England lost too many wickets that stymied partnerships which could have hurt New Zealand. A trend of batsman getting attractive 20s and 30s needs to be bucked. Jonathan Trott showed the way but England failed to bat around him.New Zealand by contrast are in excellent shape with batsmen and bowlers in form and their side settled. Both efforts with the bat in this series have been textbook. Martin Guptill played two wonderfully controlled innings that allowed freedom for the dashing players down the order. However, an attack which takes pace off the ball would test the other skills of their boundary-hitters.The New Zealand bowling has proved successful, too. Kyle Mills, Tim Southee and Mitchell McClenaghan have performed well with the new ball, Nathan McCullum has done a fine job as the spin option and once again Brendon McCullum has produced an innovative captain, his genius moment at the Ageas Bowl was the introduction of Grant Elliott. McCullum also sets a high standard in the field that his team have followed, out-fielding England at both Lord’s and Southampton.A dead rubber before a tournament gives both sides a chance to rest players – although McCullum has said his main thought is 3-0 – but England will be more concerned with rediscovering a winning formula after their Plan A was found to have a few flaws.Form guide (Most recent first)
England LLWWL
New Zealand WWLLWWatch out for…Alastair Cook has enjoyed an untroubled reign so far as England one-day captain as the side steadily improved and touched No. 1 in the world. But he has arrived at the first mini-crisis. Cook is cast as operating only within tried-and-trusted methods but now team selection and tactics may need to become a little more inventive to shake England out of the malaise shown in the first two ODIs.Tall, broad-shouldered and left-armed, Mitchell McClenaghan has enjoyed a tremendous start to his international career with 15 wickets at 18.73. He is a pacey, bouncy bowler who has taken to life in the New Zealand one-day side. He must have wondered what all the fuss was about having made his debut against South Africa in Paarl with the side at their lowest ebb of recent times. Since then, McClenaghan has been part of series wins in South Africa and now England and can look forward to a solid Champions Trophy campaign.Team newsEngland have to make changes. There is no possible case to persist with Dernbach – the most expensive bowler in ODI history who has delivered 1000 balls. Rankin was drafted into the squad and, in a dead rubber, is worth handing a debut to. There is also a strong case to replace Woakes, who has failed to live up to his billing in 13 ODIs. Bopara could replace him in the allrounder’s slot or Tredwell could play as a second spinner. England could also choose to rest Graeme Swann and James Anderson, especially if they have one or both of Broad and Finn available again.England (possible) 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Ian Bell, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Joe Root, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Ravi Bopara, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 James Tredwell, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 Boyd RankinNew Zealand, rather unexpectedly, have the luxury of a dead rubber but have already said that rotation for rotation sake won’t happen. Tim Southee should return after being rested at the Ageas Bowl and workloads of others will be noted. Daniel Vettori is unlikely to be risked ahead of the Champions Trophy. The likes of Colin Munro and Ian Butler may have to wait.New Zealand (probable) 1 Luke Ronchi (wk), 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Grant Elliott, 6 Brendon McCullum (capt), 7 James Franklin, 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Kyle Mills, 11 Mitchell McClenaghanPitch and conditionsTrent Bridge is traditionally a swing-bowler’s ground and England will be hoping that proves the case if they maintain their Plan A. But the good weather could produce a wicket with plenty of runs in it again.Stats and trivia The last time England were whitewashed in an ODI series at home was in 2006 when Sri Lanka triumphed 5-0 New Zealand’s last ODI series sweep was in 2007 when they beat Australia 3-0 (excluding series against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh). All five of New Zealand’s previous ODIs at Trent Bridge came during World Cups. They have won two and lost three, including defeat to England in 1975Quotes”What was impressive is that he always managed to find the right option at the right time.”
“It’s massively important to us to win this series 3-0. We don’t want to go to the Champions Trophy after having lost a game. We want to keep the momentum going. Any winning team is a confident team and we want to carry that forward into the Champions Trophy.”

Trott warns against trying to 'recreate history' in Australia

Jonathan Trott has said the team should aim to improve the 3-1 margin of victory they secured there in 2010-11

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Jan-2013England batsman Jonathan Trott has said the team shouldn’t try to recreate history when they visit Australia next winter.”It will be important to hopefully retain the Ashes over here, but then go to Australia and not try to emulate what happened,” Trott said, speaking to Alison Mitchell on ESPNcricinfo.”Try to do it again based on what we did last time, I think that would be quite dangerous. I don’t think there’s one recipe for everything. We need to go there and see how it goes, and who knows, try to win even more than before, not try to recreate history but just do it in its own way and set standards for ourselves.”England have a big year ahead, with two Ashes series within six months of each other, five Tests against New Zealand (three away and two home) and a Champions Trophy at home. They are currently No. 2 in the ICC Test rankings, just five points below South Africa.Trott, who scored a hundred and a half-century in England’s historic Test series win in India, has been rested from the ongoing one-day series. He backed Ashley Giles, his former Warwickshire coach, to do well in his role as England’s limited-overs coach, and said he was the “best man for the job”.”He’s done his years with Warwickshire and learnt about being a coach,” Trott said of Giles. “I think it can be quite tricky coming straight from being a player to being a coach. He knows the lines between being a mate and being a coach, and what’s expected of you and what’s expected of himself. So I think the English team of the future, in one-day cricket, is looking pretty good. There’s a lot of one-day cricket, another Champions Trophy – something we want to really do well in.”Trott credited Giles with helping him regain his focus while at Warwickshire and getting him ready for Test cricket. “He had a lot of experience to draw on from what happened in his career – media, pressure, and getting the most out of his talent. He probably saw me as a guy not doing things quite right and could probably do better. He sat me down and said, ‘I think you’re going about your business in the wrong fashion, maybe tinker with a few things here and there.'”
