Southampton’s woeful run of form in the Premier League continued on Monday evening as they were beaten 1-0 at Goodison Park by Everton.

Richarlison’s early goal was enough to separate the two teams, with Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side only threatening in the final few moments of the game, after going the vast majority of the game without a shot on target.

Although they only lost by one goal, the South Coast club produced some atrocious defending at times, especially from free-kick situations, where they would have gone 2-0 down to a Michael Keane header if not for a tight offside call.

One man who disappointed in his display was centre-back Jannik Vestergaard.

Considering the former Borussia Monchengladbach man stands at six foot six, you would expect him to dominate in the air from this dead-ball situations, but nearly every free-kick from Lucas Digne seemed to find an Everton head.

As per SofaScore, during the 90 minutes, the Danish international would win just two out of eight of his aerial duels, whilst he would win none of his three ground duels, resulting in an overall tally of 2/11 – which saw him register a shocking 18% success rate at Goodison Park.

SofaScore rated the defender a 6.6/10 for his performance, suggesting that he was one of the better performers in Hasenhuttl’s side, but in truth, he looked way off the standards he set earlier in the season.

The 28-year-old defender, who earns £60k per week at Southampton, has enjoyed an excellent Premier League campaign so far, averaging a superb 7.11 rating for his performances in the top-flight, but he was certainly nowhere near that level on Monday evening.

Vestergaard averages 3.8 aerials won per game in the Premier League, which emphasises how much he struggled against Everton’s threat in the air at Goodison Park, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin winning 10 aerial duels on the evening.

When his aerial ability is called into question, you worry what else Vestergaard can offer in this Southampton team, as his lack of pace was evident when Richarlison was afforded far too much space to run in behind the Saints defence and open the scoring.

Vestergaard also missed a late chance to equalise when he hit straight at Jordan Pickford in the area to compound a poor all-round display from the Dane.

Many Liverpool fans let rip at former Reds’ youngster Bobby Duncan after he had an afternoon to forget with his new club.

Derby County’s squad was fragmented after being hit with a coronavirus breakout in their camp, meaning a lot of second-string players came in as replacements, including the 19-year-old striker as The Rams lost to National League North side 2-0 in the FA Cup Third Round with Duncan making his first appearance for the club.

The Melwood graduate left Anfield in controversial fashion after his former agent accused Liverpool of “mentally bullying” the teenager – an accusation which the club strongly rejected.

In the end, Duncan left the Premier League champions to join Fiorentina – only for his spell to end early and he ended up in the East Midlands.

His first start for the Pride Park club was a disaster as he received the fourth-lowest match rating on the day. Per Sofascore, Duncan lost 11 duels, had no shots on goal and only made 10 accurate passes during the 90 minutes.

Unsurprisingly, Liverpool supporters were not sympathetic towards Duncan – as they seemingly hadn’t forgotten the manner in which he left the club in the first place.

Ahead of the summer, Italian outlet Calciomercato claimed that the Midlands outfit were one of three Premier League teams chasing the enigmatic Mexican winger.

Both West Ham and Everton were also interested in signing him.

The Toffees were likely the front-runners due to both Carlo Ancelotti and Marcel Brands having an influence in his career at Napoli and PSV Eindhoven.

A move to Molineux would have seen him link up with his international teammate Raul Jimenez, and what a partnership that could’ve been this season.

One that got away?

According to ESPN, the Serie A outfit appeared to be offering the 25-year-old out to anyone that would bite despite costing them €42m (£38m) just a year earlier.

Well, perhaps Jeff Shi and Nuno Santo should’ve taken their arm off as Lozano has since scored four goals in four league games for Napoli, averaging a whopping three shots, 1.3 dribbles and 0.5 key passes per game, via WhoScored.

Brands, who signed him for PSV, once likened ‘Chucky’ to Lionel Messi in an interview with AD (per Football.London), claiming:

“When you look at his playing style, without wanting to compare, you know, Lozano has what Messi also has – a centre of gravity low to the ground, the ball is usually quickly under control, very explosive and agile. Then your opponents automatically force mistakes.”

The Mexican’s spell in Holland was particularly lucrative, bagging 40 goals and 23 assists across two electric seasons.

Nuno has called on his side to start sharing the goals around – well, the solution was staring him right in the face if he was truly keen on signing Lozano.

Jimenez has scored four of their six top-flight goals with only Pedro Neto and Romain Saiss chipping in with the other two, per WhoScored.

Daniel Podence’s 1.4 shots per game is surely a worry to his manager after his recent comments, so maybe he’ll regret not bringing in the explosive Napoli star this summer.

Not bringing in the tricky dynamo has clearly cost them dearly. An unforgivable error from the Wolf Pack boss.

Carlo Ancelotti’s ruthless overhaul is right to include Bernard as Everton entertain the idea of sending the Brazilian playmaker to Serie A heavyweights AS Roma on a one-season loan.

What’s the word?

According to The Telegraph (5/10, 16:52), Everton are in talks with Roma over a potential loan deal for Bernard that would see the 29-year-old join the Giallorossi for the 2020/21 season after being deemed surplus to requirements by Ancelotti.

The Italian tactician is utilising every last second of the summer transfer window to clear out the deadwood at Goodison Park, as he sees no role for Bernard to play in his future plans as the Brazilian gets shown the door alongside the Southampton-bound Theo Walcott.

Bernard has played just two Carabao Cup fixtures for the Toffees this term and been left an unused substitute in each of the Merseyside outfit’s Premier League matches whilst they begin the campaign unbeaten across all competitions after seven games.

Ancelotti has previously been full of praise for Bernard, but noted back in August how he struggles to see how the former Shakhtar Donetsk man impacts fixtures that Everton are not dominating.

“He is really good with the ball and he did really well against Crystal Palace where he scored the first goal,” the former Chelsea boss said, via quotes by the Liverpool Echo.

“When the game is in balance, it is more difficult for him to prove his quality. When we have control of the game, for him it is easier for him to prove his quality. Maybe for this reason, I put him [in the team] at home and not away.”

Right to send Bernard to Rome

While Bernard is a fan favourite at Goodison Park and shares a mutual love for the supporters, Ancelotti is completely right to be seeking an option that would send the 29-year-old away from Merseyside before the summer window slams shut.

Beyond not featuring in the Blues’ Premier League efforts so far this season, Bernard had little to no impact on their top-flight performances last term with just one assist and one goal from 16 appearances following Ancelotti’s arrival – last coming in February.

The £14.4m-rated midfielder boasted a greater impact during Marco Silva’s tenure in 2019/20 with two goals and an assist, but his end of term statistics still showed a player who managed just 0.3 shots and 0.9 key balls each top-flight game, per SofaScore.

He also managed just 1.1 successful dribbles per league match, won just 39% of his duels, lost possession 9.3 times and delivered just 0.2 accurate crosses. All the while, Bernard was being paid £120,000-per-week as Everton’s joint-highest earner.

Glasgow Rangers continued their fantastic early season form with another win on Saturday against Dundee United at Ibrox.

Despite being hit by a number of injuries – Ryan Jack, Alfredo Morelos and Brandon Barker were all forced off the pitch with different issues, whilst Leon Balogun was unable to even start after encountering a problem in the warm-up – the Gers prevailed 4-0 thanks to goals from Kemar Roofe, Ryan Kent, James Tavernier and Scott Arfield.

Whilst he did not get on the scoresheet, this was a big game for Ianis Hagi. The Romania international recently made the permanent switch to the 54-time Scottish champions for £3m, but he had so far failed to set the world alight with just one goal in his first six matches. This weekend, though, he sparked into life.

The two assists he managed will catch the eye, but he proved to be an important part of everything the Gers did going forward. All in all, he made three key passes, had five shots himself, and completed one of the two dribbles he attempted. Playing in an attacking midfield role, he finally started to show why the Gers wanted to sign him.

So far, he has come under criticism from portions of the club’s fanbase, but this performance will hopefully be the start of getting them back on side. It also helped that he was playing in his favourite position rather than out on the right wing, as has been the case at times already this campaign. All in all, Steven Gerrard could not have asked for much more from his number seven.

Newcastle United midfielder Dan Barlaser is in contention to be in the squad for tonight’s Premier League opener away to David Moyes’ West Ham United at London Stadium.

That is according to Rotherham United manager Paul Warne, who took Barlaser on loan with him in League One in 2019/20 as he helped them get promoted to the Championship.

In comments made by Warne that were relayed by The Chronicle, he claimed that he really liked Barlaser and hinted that he would like to work with him again, but he also said that he is in contention to be in Steve Bruce’s squad for their game against the Hammers.

Indeed, Barlaser is a man who has unfortunately been on the fringes of the first team at Newcastle, playing in just three senior matches in all competitions and none since 2017/18, as per Transfermarkt.

However, the Englishman has been a prominent figure for the Magpies at youth level, making two appearances for the under-18 side before making the jump to the under-23 team, where he has played in 88 games across all competitions over six consecutive campaigns, scoring eight goals and supplying a further 12 assists (per Transfermarkt).

Barlaser has scored a total of 13 goals over the course of his club career, including youth level, and provided a further 19 assists in 177 matches in all competitions, while also being able to play in a number of different roles (via Transfermarkt).

Indeed, it may be worth a punt for the Toon to keep hold of the 23-year old to see if he can have a breakthrough term under Bruce.
