A fresh twist has emerged on reported Newcastle transfer target Raheem Sterling regarding his thoughts on a potential move to Tyneside.

The England international has admitted that he would be open to a transfer away from Manchester City, claiming that football is the most important thing to him in life.

Sterling, who has been linked with a switch to St James’ Park, has also revealed that he has ambitions to play outside of England.

He told BBC Sport: “If there was the opportunity to go somewhere else, I would be open to it. At this moment in time, football is the most important thing to me.

“I have always had something that maybe one day I would love to play abroad and see how I meet that challenge.”

These quotes from Sterling will surely leave Newcastle fans feeling excited, particularly following reports of the club’s interest in signing him in 2022. PIF are reportedly keen on adding a marquee addition to the squad after their takeover and the 26-year-old is one of the players they are targeting to be the poster boy of the new era on Tyneside.

Whilst the talk of a transfer to a club outside of England is not ideal, the overall message hints at a move away from Manchester City, and that could open the door for Newcastle to swoop. They could convince him to put his travel plans on hold for a few years to come and lead the Magpies into the future as part of their rebuild, potentially leaving to play in Italy, Germany or Spain further down the line.

Therefore, Sterling’s comments may leave Magpies fans hopeful that PIF could tempt him away from the Etihad Stadium in the coming months, as it has now known that he is open to leaving. Before these quotes came out, it was unclear whether or not the forward would have been interested in moving on from Pep Guardiola’s side, which could have had a big impact on Newcastle’s chances of landing him.

Over the summer, former Chelsea player and manager Frank Lampard was effusive in his praise of the former Liverpool flyer, saying: “He’s excellent, I love him as a player. He’s had a dip in form, and he’ll admit that, but what we’re seeing now is the player we’ve seen for the last three years.

“If I’m talking to a young, wannabe winger now who wants to play, he’s an example on the pitch and off the pitch. He’s had tough times, but now he’s coming through it and he looks like a man. He’s just a world-class player.”

The Gunners kickstart the new season with a trip to top-flight newcomers Brentford, but manager Mikel Arteta will be without the services of first-choice defender Gabriel Magalhaes after he suffered an injury during international duty with Brazil, where he clinched a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

An announcement on the club’s official website revealed the extent of the issue and it appears that the 23-year-old will be out until next month at the very earliest.

“Right knee. Gabriel sustained an injury to his right knee whilst with the Brazilian Olympic Squad. Gabriel continues to be assessed and is aiming to be back in training by early September.”

Not an ideal start

In his absence, £50m summer signing Ben White could be vying for his debut, whilst Rob Holding and Pablo Mari are also in contention to start.

With Thomas Partey and Eddie Nketiah also ruled out, Arteta is already facing a frustrating injury crisis before a ball has even been kicked. The pair suffered problems during the friendly against Chelsea a few weeks ago and neither of the three will play any part on the opening day.

Gabriel’s injury is particularly disappointing and will surely come as the biggest blow as Arteta is going to be without his no.1 centre-back for the first month of the season, where he’ll be expecting a reaction to last season’s lowly eighth-place finish.

The £22.5m-rated colossus started 22 of his 23 appearances in the Premier League last season and was arguably one of the Gunners’ best options at the back.

Of all Arteta’s central defensive options, his WhoScored average of 6.73 was only just bettered by Holding (6.79), whilst he was second to Mari for aerial duels won (2.5) per game and first for interceptions (1.1) per game.

The Spanish head coach could well be worried heading into kickoff after this fresh injury setback.

Many Glasgow Rangers fans were left fuming at Alfredo Morelos after he missed a big chance in their UEFA Europa League qualifying game on Thursday night.

The Colombia international was put through one-on-one by Scott Arfield around the half-hour mark away at Alashkert, but could not finish from close range as he was denied by the opposition’s goalkeeper.

With the score 0-0 at that stage, coupled up with the fact that Steven Gerrard’s men only won the first leg at home 1-0, his miss certainly brought nerves around some members of the Ibrox faithful.

Luckily for Morelos, that is how the match finished, and so the Light Blues managed to go through into the group stages of the competition.

Nonetheless, several supporters were left unimpressed by his failure to score.

Steve Howey has tipped Jannik Vestergaard to be a hit after completing his move to Leicester City.

Vestergaard has joined the Foxes in a £15million switch from Premier League rivals Southampton.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers made his move after Wesley Fofana suffered a broken leg in the pre-season friendly with Villarreal last week.

Vestergaard, who featured in all six fixtures as Denmark reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020, leaves Saints having entered the final 12 months of his £60,000-per-week contract.

The central defender boasts plenty of Premier League experience, having made 72 top flight appearances since swapping German side Borussia Monchengladbach for Southampton in 2018.

Vestergaard’s precarious contract situation at St Mary’s also resulted in Tottenham Hotspur raising an interest earlier in the transfer window.

But Leicester, who will start their Premier League campaign by welcoming Wolverhampton Wanderers to the King Power Stadium tomorrow, have beaten Spurs to the 29-year-old’s services and ex-Foxes centre-back Howey believes Vestergaard will prove to be a shrewd signing.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Howey said: “I really like him. He’s big, strong and I’m quite impressed with how he uses the ball. He’s dangerous from set-pieces as well.

“Southampton were trying to cash in on him because he had gone into the last year of his contract and he could otherwise leave on a free next summer.

“I’m really surprised none of the big boys came in for him.”
