Celtic should have cashed in on Dedryck Boyata and signed Jason Denayer

Celtic managed to keep hold of wantaway centre-back Dedryck Boyata during the summer transfer window, but former star Jason Denayer’s latest display for Lyon in the Champions League suggests they should have cashed in on the Belgian and brought his compatriot back to Celtic Park instead.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the 27-year-old Bhoys star was attracting plenty of interest – including from Premier League side Fulham – having made more appearances than he may have expected to for his country at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he impressed alongside the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Vincent Kompany.

Even though it was well-documented via his agent that he was keen to go, the dominant central defender ended up remaining in Glasgow going into the final year of his contract, and even scored the winner in the 1-0 Old Firm victory against Rangers earlier this month.

With the likes of Jack Hendry and Jozo Simunovic looking shaky in the Belgian’s absence at the very beginning of the campaign, Brendan Rodgers had little choice but to reintegrate him into the team following a stuttering start – even if the fans may not have agreed with the decision.

Why should they have signed Denayer?

The 23-year-old was a big favourite alongside Virgil van Dijk at Parkhead during the 2014/15 campaign as he made 44 appearances in all competitions and scored six goals.

Given his outstanding Champions League display for Lyon – for whom he joined for €6.5m (around £6m) initially, well in Celtic’s price range – in their brilliant 2-1 win against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night, the Scottish Premiership holders may well have made an error not getting rid of one Belgian and replacing him with another.

Denayer had no trouble dealing with the likes of Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero, and he proved he could have been a huge star for Celtic this season – perhaps even saving their own Champions League campaign – and chief executive Peter Lawwell should already be regretting this poor transfer call.

Two players Newcastle must buy and one they should sell this summer

Newcastle United have already made a couple of additions in the summer transfer market, but manager Rafa Benitez will likely want more in the coming days and weeks – especially with the window closing early on August 9 this year.

The signings of Martin Dubravka and Ki Sung-Yueng have hardly broken the budget, and there will certainly be a few positions they need to strengthen in if they are to improve on the impressive 10th-place finish they achieved last term.

Those reinforcements could come in attacking positions in particular given the Tyneside outfit only managed to score 39 goals in their 38 Premier League matches during the 2017/18 campaign, especially with someone like Aleksandar Mitrovic looking likely to be on his way through the St James’ Park exit door sooner rather than later.

Benitez and owner Mike Ashley have yet to really flex their muscles in terms of transfer fees – something the former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss will demand – and now the priority must be to make some marquee additions, in conjunction with letting individuals leave.

Here are two huge signings Newcastle must make this summer, as well as one major sale…

Following such a successful loan spell during the 2017/18 campaign, it is no surprise that Benitez wants to bring the Brazilian back to Stamford Bridge.

The 22-year-old made a huge impression in the Magpies’ battle against the drop and became a big fans’ favourite, and the fact that he already knows the club and their style of play means that he would take no time to settle in again at St James’ Park.

Whether it is another loan or on a permanent deal, there is no doubt that he would be a big signing in Newcastle’s bid to improve again.

With Aleksandar Mitrovic looking likely to leave and Joselu failing to really make his mark at St James’ Park yet, it seems clear that Benitez’s transfer priority is to bring a new centre-forward to Tyneside before August 9.

The fact that Rondon is said to be available for £16.5m because of a release clause in his contract following West Bromwich Albion’s relegation to the Championship certainly makes him a realistic option for them, and he has all of the attributes to be a success for the Magpies.

While his goal record isn’t too prolific, the fact that he can hold the ball up well and is willing to work hard for his team means he would fit in well.

With new faces coming in, it seems inevitable that some of the key first-team players from last season will be on their way, and one of the headline exits may well be Ritchie.

The Scotland international has been a key player and a regular in the starting XI over the course of the past two campaigns, but with Stoke City said to be willing to bid big to bring him to the Britannia Stadium, Benitez may choose to cash in so he can boost his own transfer budget.

The 28-year-old perhaps didn’t make as much of an impact in the final third last term as may have been expected from him, and a move could be best for all parties.

Manchester United question Neville’s claim about winning the Premier League

As it is now less than a month until the Premier League season gets underway, pundits and fans alike starting look ahead to the new campaign.

In an interview with MUTV Phil Neville claimed that Jose Mourinho and his men will be focused on winning the title this season, and he believes that with a few improvements, they can reach that feat.

United have had a period of inconsistency since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, and not only have they had struggles on the pitch, they have had three different managers across a four-year spell.

David Moyes lasted 10 months, while Louis van Gaal was sacked after two years, shortly following the club’s FA Cup win.

Now, Mourinho is at the helm, and in his first season he managed to guide the team to two trophies – the League Cup and Europa League.

However, they had trouble in the Premier League, eventually finishing sixth, and the only reason that they are in this season’s Champions League is because they won the Europa crown.

Neville is confident that the club can challenge for the title, but the fans are not so sure, with many responding to the interview by urging the Red Devils to buy more players.

Victor Lindelof is so far the only man to come through the welcome gates at Old Trafford, but United are constantly linked to high-profile names in the press.

Even though Neville feels optimistic about the season ahead, some supporters need convincing.

The West Ham XI Bilic must pick vs. Man City

West Ham play host to title-chasing Manchester City in the hope of securing a place in the fourth round of the FA Cup tonight.

The Irons have enjoyed a festive period that witnessed them increase the gap between themselves and the relegation zone in league action, with three wins and a controversial defeat against Manchester United.

It would be foolish for Slaven Bilic to underestimate Pep Guardiola’s Man City team, though, despite the Citizens’ title challenge being rocked by a loss at Liverpool on New Year’s Eve.

Nonetheless, Guardiola’s side have the ability to press the self-destruct button and could allow the Hammers to pull off an early shock.

To have a chance of keeping his team’s name in the mix for the next round, Bilic must pick this starting XI at the London Stadium…

Republic of Ireland international Randolph has looked a man possessed in recent weeks with his performances saving the Hammers from embarrassing defeats on numerous occasions.

Randolph fully deserves his place in the starting XI, with Adrian set to remain on the bench for the visit of the two-time Premier League champions.

From set-pieces, Antonio’s contribution could be decisive. The versatile star missed two crucial – and potentially game-changing – chances during his team’s defeat to Manchester United, though.

Antonio also must not neglect his defensive duties against the Citizens as allowing them space to run into could make for brutal viewing for the home supporters.

You get the feeling that if Reid plays well, West Ham’s chances of victory are instantly doubled.

The defender continues to be a leader in Bilic’s side, and he must contain the returning Sergio Aguero tonight.

Reid was controversially elbowed by the Argentine during their defeat to City in August, and overcoming City would be the perfect revenge for the New Zealand international.

As Collins faces a late fitness test to return to the side, Bilic would be foolish to risk playing the defender with bigger fixtures still in store for the Hammers.

The Italian defender divides opinion amongst the Hammers faithful, but his performances over the Christmas period mean he is deserving of his place in the starting XI.

Along with Collins, Arthur Masuaku faces a late fitness test so Bilic should stick to what has proved successful for the east Londoners thus far this campaign.

Cresswell gives the Hammers defensive security while also providing that ability to stretch opponents’ defences.

Against the quality of City, Cresswell will have to be more disciplined going forward.

Obiang has forced his way into the Hammers side after a slow debut season.

The Spaniard was impressive against Manchester United on Monday and his ability is there for all to witness. He offers physcilaity and dynamism, which will be vital vs. Man City.

CM: Havard Nordtveit

Norwegian midfielder Nordtveit has struggled for a regular starting position in the West Ham side this season, but a respectable performance against Manchester City may finally secure regular first-team football for the former Arsenal trainee.

With Nordtveit expected to be the anchorman for the Hammers, he needs to make sure any City counter-attacks are swiftly halted to guarantee the damage is limited.

CAM: Manuel Lanzini

Argentine midfielder Lanzini has struggled to regain the form that meant the Hammers had to fend off competition to sign him over the summer.

With competition for places expected to become even more fierce with players returning to full fitness, Lanzini has his chance to shine against one of European football’s best teams, and he must take it.

RW: Sofiane Feghouli

Having had his red card rescinded following a controversial challenge against Manchester United and having not been called up to the Africa Cup of Nations, Feghouli must start against Guardiola’s side.

The Algerian winger is yet to showcase his real potential thus far at the London Stadium, and now would be the perfect time for the former Valencia ace to end any doubts surrounding his ability.

French midfielder Payet has an influential role to play, as his ability from set-pieces could severely damage a weak City back-four.

Payet is the one player in the West Ham squad with that wow factor and he could turn it on on the big stage.

The England international is still trying to regain match fitness, and with the Irons stuck in a battle to avoid the drop, Carroll could be instrumental in them surviving relegation.

Carroll has scored three goals against City during his career, and another one against Guardiola’s side could see the Hammers through to the next round.

Fantasy Football Weekly: Man United star gets the chop

Another week has passed and another set of Fantasy Football questions arise as we head into the fourth game of the Premier League.

Chelsea grabbed their first three points of the season via a thrilling win over West Bromwich Albion, with new signing Pedro Rodriguez grabbing the headlines (and the points) with a goal and an assist in the first 30 minutes.

Diego Costa also had the same output, while Eden Hazard failed to shine with only an assist to show for his efforts.

Manchester United continue their defensive stability with their third successive clean sheet, but on the other end the likes of Memphis Depay and Wayne Rooney both struggled against a defiant Newcastle United side.

And Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez just can’t stop scoring, notching his fourth goal of the season to lead the goalscoring charts and earning his third double-digit points tally in the Fantasy Football world.

However, it is Bournemouth’s Calum Wilson who stole the show, scoring his side’s first ever Premier League goal before completing the first hat-trick of the season against West Ham United. Who saw that coming?

Once again we will take a look at players you should consider BUYing, SELLing, or HOLDing on to going into the next gameweek!

BUY: Philippe Coutinho

Looking at the immediate short-term fixtures, it would be a smart idea to consider bringing Liverpool star midfielder Philippe Coutinho (8.1) into your squad.

Those that missed the Reds’ game against Arsenal will realize that Coutinho is playing in a dangerous position right behind Christian Benteke, and if it wasn’t for Petr Cech and a matter of inches, the Brazilian would have netted at least a brace against the Gunners.

Now with three rather favourable oppositions [West Ham (H), Norwich (H), and Aston Villa (H)] in their next four games, Coutinho has the chance to add to his one goal this season. The tricky tie against Man United (A) after the international break may be a tricky fixture, but how many times have seen him score a worldie against a top side?

SELL: Memphis Depay

Many drafted Memphis Depay (8.5) into their squads ahead of the Red Devils’ game against Newcastle United at Old Trafford last weekend following his brace against Club Brugge, but the Netherlands star once again failed to make his mark in the English top flight.

And although we have nothing against his potential ability, Man United’s upcoming harsh fixtures and the option of better alternatives makes Depay an unreasonable pick heading into gameweek four.

You may, however, consider holding the former PSV star for another game to save a free transfer before the international break, but if you are looking to make a move Depay is a good choice to be sacrificed for the likes of Pedro (9.5), Nacer Chadli (7.0), Riyad Mahrez (6.0), or the aforementioned Philippe Coutinho (8.1).

HOLD: Eden Hazard

Yes we’ve repeated our HOLD selection from the previous week due to the fact that many Fantasy managers are already shipping Eden Hazard (10.4) out of their squads for new boy Pedro (9.5), resulting in the Belgium international already seeing a drop in price from 10.5.

However, Chelsea will host Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge this weekend and last season’s PFA Player of the Year has every chance to grab his first goal of the season to add to his assist last weekend.

Currently on spot kick duties, the Blues will look to attack the Eagles on Saturday and Hazard will likely be amongst the goals. Don’t hurry him out of your team just yet especially with the international break coming up where you can further evaluate your squad (also a good time to wildcard for those who haven’t).

BUY: Mame Biram Diouf or Xherdan Shaqiri

While many will think that Bournemouth hattrick hero Calum Wilson is a must buy heading into gameweek four, we believe that Stoke City’s know-how and experience in the Premier League gives one of either Mame Biram Diouf (6.5) or Xherdan Shaqiri (7.0) an edge to the Englishman.

The Potters have an amazing run of fixtures until gameweek 10 which sees games against West Brom (H), Leicester (H), Bournemouth (H), Aston Villa (A), Swansea (A), and Watford (H), with a gameweek five trip to play Arsenal their only real cause of concern.

And Diouf or Shaqiri, whichever position is of need in your respective squads, should be among the points in Mark Hughes new Barcelona-esque squad. The two are also the most nailed-on picks in the line-up in their array of attacking players.

SELL: Yohan Cabaye

At just 6.6, you may be wondering why it is being advised that you sell Yohan Cabaye ahead of gameweek 4. The France midfielder is a brilliant player for the Eagles, but he is playing in a deeper role and Palace’s fixtures are about to get extremely tough in the coming weeks.

Alan Pardew’s men face a daunting run of Chelsea (A), Man City (H), and Tottenham (A) in their next three games, before their fixtures ease up to merit selection.

Yet, the issue is that there are far better (and cheaper) options in the Crystal Palace roster. Let’s start with Jason Puncheon (6.0), who already has two assists to his name and is on free-kick and corner duties. Then there is new boy Bakary Sako (5.5), who was Palace’s main attacking threat against Aston Villa last weekend and scored on his debut. And finally there is Yannick Bolasie (6.3), although we will have to see whether he remains at Selhurst Park after September 1st amid Tottenham’s interest.

HOLD: Christian Benteke

Last week, we did recommend that you need to make space to buy Manchester City star Sergio Aguero (13.2) ahead of City’s decent run of fixtures (aligned of course with their amazing form so far this season). And many believe Christian Benteke (8.5) should be sacrificed to make way for the Argentine after 36,290 managers sold the Belgian.

However, the Reds have just come off an amazing display at the Emirates and were unlucky to be held at 0-0 by a brilliant Petr Cech in goal. Benteke should have scored his chance, but take nothing away from the former Chelsea shot-stopper.

Yet, with West Ham travelling to Anfield this weekend before also hosting Norwich and Aston Villa after their tricky trip to Old Trafford, Benteke has a good opportunity to add to his one goal so far this season.

So we advise you to hold on to the ex-Villa man the next couple of gameweeks, with maybe Wayne Rooney (if you have him) sacrificed for Aguero.

Julian Hall: The 15-year-old New York Red Bulls star wanted by Europe's elite after becoming youngest MLS player since Freddy Adu

The prodigiously gifted left-winger is already making history and megaclubs across the pond are taking notice

Looking back at the moment itself just a few months later, Julian Hall admits he wasn't nervous. Even he is surprised by that fact. How in the world did he not feel a tidal wave of anxiety the moment he stepped onto the field?

You see, the moment in question came on September 30, 2023. With the New York Red Bulls down a goal, the club turned to Hall in the 80th minute. Nothing unusual, clubs turn to attacking players late in games all the time. The difference is that Hall is 15 years old. 15. The number bears repeating.

Too young to go get a driver's license, but old enough to play meaningful minutes in an MLS game for a club in a playoff race. By making his appearance, Hall became the second-youngest player in MLS history. The only one younger? Freddy Adu.

"I wouldn't say there were nerves," Hall told GOAL, "which is pretty surprising. I definitely just couldn't believe that I was on the field. It was really surreal to me. It took me a while to even feel like I was playing in the game. It was definitely one of the best feelings I've ever experienced and hopefully, I can continue with that."

The world is watching now. Clubs all over Europe have been linked, and they're big ones. Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich.. all have been linked with the rising 15-year-old starlet.

It's still wild to Hall, whose life has totally changed over the last year in ways he still can't quite fathom.

"I think it's all changed a lot after last year," he said. "I never really got the high school experience. I never really attended high school before, but there was a pretty big chunk of teenage life that got away a bit, but it's all been taken out for a good reason now: my development and for me to have a career in this sport."

What's next for the rising 15-year-old star? GOAL spoke to Hall to discuss his career so far and, of course, his hopes for the future…

Insta: julianhall_Where it all began

He doesn't remember the exact moment it happened, nor the real reason why. There was no wake-up moment for Hall when he was younger. At some point early on, he just really fell in love with soccer.

Hall played other sports, but, at one point, soccer became the one. And it didn't take him long to realize that he was actually pretty damn good at it.

"I wouldn't say I was ever the best player, that came at a later time," Hall said. "I started training from age or three years up, and that made me realize that maybe I had a chance to pursue this as a career. When I look at where I am right now, it makes me feel like I have a chance to go somewhere with soccer."

Growing up, Hall was inspired by those around him. He had the usual European influences, although those were only heightened by his Polish ancestry. He loved watching Manchester United, although he initially chose them as a kid mostly for the colors. The player he idolized most, though, was Robert Lewandowski, as anyone with a connection to Poland would.

Born in Manhattan, Hall embraced the uniqueness of the New York soccer scene, one that has always been a big melting pot of cultures. He came from a Polish background through his mother's side, but a quick walk around any New York City game will introduce you to any number of players from any number of different backgrounds.

"There were all sorts of cultures and people," Hall said. "Especially when I played on my local team, people were coming from all over the city. It's definitely thriving where I'm from."

By the time he was 12, though, Hall was ready to make the leap from New York to New Jersey. He joined the Red Bulls in 2020, and it didn't take long for him to prove himself at one of the best academies in MLS.

AdvertisementThe big break

Hall's early years with the Red Bulls youth teams? In a word: dominant.

In 39 matches, the forward scored 28 goals for the academy team, working his way up the ranks. His most notable achievement came with the Red Bulls U-15s at the 2023 MLS NEXT Cup, where he scored five goals to earn an MVP award and, more importantly, the tournament trophy for the Red Bulls team. He also won the Golden Boot award at the 2023 Generation adidas Cup, scoring five more goals, including two in a win over Chelsea.

Ahead of the 2023 MLS Next Pro season, Hall signed his first professional deal. He went on to make 10 appearances, scoring twice despite being among the younger players in the league. By September, those in charge had seen enough to offer him a three-year contract with the first team. And then, just 23 days later, he was on the field for that debut just over halfway into his 15th year on this planet.

"In terms of training with them and getting opportunities with the first team, because of that, [the debut] wasn't a surprise," he said. "I try to stay ready for anything. Anything can happen. But, with that, that was something that I couldn't believe happened in that moment"

He added: "Of course I see certain things going on. Of course, the accolades for the players that came before me, they were all important in making the history of the league. For me now, I think it's incredibly important to just stay focused, especially on myself."

In just a few years, Hall had basically speed-run the Red Bulls system. He made leap after leap after leap relatively quickly, going from academy to second team to first before his 16th birthday.

How it's going

The expectation is that Hall will be eased into the Red Bulls' first team. He's just 15, after all. There's so much maturing he needs to do, on and off the field, before he's ready to be a regular contributor at a top, top level.

If this preseason is anything to go by, though, Hall might not be too far away from his second MLS appearance.

"Julian is one of those players that, no matter what we put in front of him, he managed to have an impact and he managed to adapt," said Red Bulls academy director Sean McCafferty. "We'd be lying, though, if we said we'd expected him to adapt to first-team training as quickly as he has."

He added:" The best compliment I can give him is that every time you put him into an environment where you think he's going to struggle, he finds a way to make it work."

Hall got plenty of minutes during the Red Bulls' preseason run and, against St. Louis, he came off the bench to win a penalty for his team. He provided an assist against the Chicago Fire, too, teeing up Elias Manoel. It's the type of impact he can make, even at his age.

Still, the Red Bulls won't rush him. Hall will be given all the time he needs.

Biggest strengths

Able to play across the attacking line, Hall is primarily a left-winger, one with the ability to beat a defender and, when the time comes, make things happen in the final third.

His goalscoring record on the youth level speaks for itself, as do his preseason contributions. Despite his age, Hall is confident and dynamic, a player who has an eye for goal at every level he's played at so far in his young career.

"I think being an attacking threat is a huge part of being an attacker, but I have so much to learn. I have great role models at the club to help me to keep improving every day. Nothing is final yet, of course, but there are always things that I can improve on."

At 5'10", Hall already has size, and he could still grow a bit considering his age. He has the pace and skill to beat defenders, helping him create the moments needed to contribute in the attacking third. In terms of physical gifts, they're all there, which is why he can play with players twice his age.

Hall has already found one heck of a role model with the Red Bulls: club legend Bradley Wright-Phillips. One of the most prolific strikers MLS has ever seen, Wright-Phillips has helped Hall adjust to life at this new level.

"I came into the team last year at a young age and it was a new environment for me," he said. "Bradley Wright-Phillips is someone with a great history in the league. The fact that he's still around the team and at the facility, he's available all the time to ask questions and get information from him."

"I think the things that he showed when he was in the league, there's that potential for myself, but I have a long way to go, but having him there is definitely a key aspect of my development."

Wright-Phillips said of hall: "I think he needs a lot more games at the MLS NEXT Pro level but I will say this – the way he’s matured, his body, everything… he’s ready to get minutes for the first-team — and if he does, don’t be surprised if he comes on and has an impact in some games.

"But I think with the young players, we don’t wanna go too fast. There are steps you have to take to adjust your game and I think Julian should take those steps and if he continues to do well at the NEXT Pro level… then he will get his chance."

Their captain let them down for once, but the Albiceleste are into the knockout stages of the World Cup thanks to two unlikely heroes

Lionel Messi is a lucky boy. For a long, long time in Doha, it appeared as if Argentina were going to pay for their captain's latest penalty miss with a place in the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup.

However, this time, Messi was bailed out by two unlikely heroes, with Alexis Mac Allister making the crucial breakthrough against Poland before Julian Alvarez sealed a 2-0 victory that sees the Albiceleste progress to the knockout stages as winners of Group C.

Lionel Scaloni's side will now face Australia in Al Rayyan on Saturday and, having recovered from the shock of losing to Saudi Arabia in their tournament-opener with back-to-back wins, Argentina are once again looking like serious World Cup contenders.

Seriously, what a time to score your first international goal! Argentina had battered Poland during the first half. The xG was 1.98 to 0.23 in their favour. But they just could not find a way through. Hell, even Messi had messed up. Step forward Alexis Mac Allister, a man making just his 10th appearance for his country, to score the goal that was probably nearly celebrated as wildly in Brighton as Buenos Aires.

Wojciech Szczesny:

A second successive spot-kick save for the Poland goalkeeper, and what a beauty it was! Could Messi have better placed his penalty? Undoubtedly. But it was seriously well struck and it took an incredibly strong hand from Szczesny to parry it away to safety. Of course, while he may have won his personal duel with Messi, he still ended up on the losing side. Szczesny, though, was arguably the only Polish player who can be proud of his performance.

Julian Alvarez:

It wasn't so long ago that a starstruck Alvarez was getting photos with Messi. And yet here he was, playing on the game's grandest stage with his idol, and upstaging him too. It was a hell of a step up in class for Erling Haaland's understudy at Manchester City, but he proved himself an excellent young striker in his own right. There was plenty of pressure on Alvarez's shoulders after being asked to take over from Inter ace Lautaro Martinez up front, but the 22-year-old made light of it, sealing victory with a stunning strike into the top corner. A star has well and truly been born.

Argentina's fans:

It's only the host nation that's supposed to have home advantage at a tournament. However, Argentina's supporters ripped up the playbook here at Stadium 974. They turned this into a Qatari version of the Bombonera, and make no mistake about it, they played a pivotal role in this victory. They weren't even deflated by the penalty miss, with chants of 'Messi! Messi! Messi!' immediately ringing around the arena. With this kind of support at every ground they grace, anything is possible for Argentina in Qatar.

The officials:

Another game, another VARce. Never in a million years should Danny Makkelie have been asked to take another look at Szczesny accidentally making slight contact with Messi's face with a flailing hand. Even then, there was an expectancy among the few neutrals in this arena that common sense would prevail and the referee would allow play to continue. Sadly, Makkelie decided otherwise. Incredibly, it needs saying once again: not all contact equates to a foul. Unfortunately, this probably won't be the last time at this tournament that we're left wondering what on earth is going on in the VAR room.

Lionel Messi's penalty record:

Messi is not perfect. His penalty record proves it. With his miss here, he has equalled an unwanted record. Since records began in 1966, only Asamoah Gyan has squandered two spot-kicks at a World Cup. He may have made amends for his 2018 miss against Iceland by converting his penalty against Saudi Arabia on matchday one, but will he get another chance to make up for his latest failure from 12 yards? Maybe, actually, if the officials keep giving him penalties for nothing!

Robert Lewandowski:

Any football fan has to feel a huge degree of sympathy for Lewandowski. We're talking about one of the game's all-time great strikers, so for him to have to spearhead such a painfully pragmatic Poland side just feels wrong. He deserves better than this. Even after they had fallen behind, and with Mexico leading, Czeslaw Michniewicz still didn't instruct his players to push forward. They were happy to try sneak through with a defeat, and it paid off. Just. But it's difficult to make a case for them deserving to go through, given they made no use of a supreme striker for the duration of the game. Sadly, Lewandowski is likely in for another long night against France this weekend…

Getty ImagesArgentina Ratings: Defence

Emiliano Martinez (6/10):

Shaky under pass-back pressure in the opening minutes but had nothing to do thereafter.

Nahuel Molina (7/10):

Recalled in place of Gonzalo Montiel and was always willing to get forward in support of Angel Di Maria. Teed up Mac Allister for the opening goal.

Cristian Romero (6/10):

Struggled at times with the strength of Lewandowski but this was a much better display after his horror show against Saudi Arabia.

Nicolas Otamendi (8/10):

Argentina's best defender at this tournament by some distance. Introduced himself to Lewandowski with one tremendously-timed tackle inside the opening 15 minutes and followed that up with a bone-crunching challenge on Przemyslaw Frankowski. Immense.

Marcos Acuna (7/10):

Always made himself available on the left wing and was repeatedly picked out by Messi. His touch and final ball let him down a few times, though.

Rodrigo De Paul (6/10):

One can't fault his energy and endeavour but he's still not at his best. Misplaced several passes and did some silly things at times.

Enzo Fernandez (8/10):

Rewarded with a start after his stunner against Mexico and once again made an impact, with his scooped pass setting up Alvarez for Argentina's second goal.
