Luke Pomersbach has escaped a jail sentence but has been banned by Western Australia until the end of the 2010-11 season after admitting to assaulting a police officer during a drunken rampage. However, Pomersbach could be back in action for the Warriors as early as January 2010, if he meets certain conditions outlined by the state.Pomersbach pleaded guilty to six charges in Perth Magistrates Court on Friday, including driving with a blood alcohol level in excess of .08 and obstructing police. He was fined $3500 and had his driving licence suspended for six months over the series of events in the Perth beachside suburb of Scarborough on Sunday night. The charges included assaulting one of the police officers who tried to arrest him after a series of traffic incidents, although the policeman suffered only minor injuries after being pushed by Pomersbach. But while Pomersbach was not sentenced to jail, the Western Australian Cricket Association has banned him from representing the state in any form of cricket until the end of the 2010-11 season. His resumption date could be brought forward to January 1, 2010, if Pomersbach attends all medical and counseling sessions as required by the WACA and strictly adheres to the terms of his playing contract. The WACA has also fined Pomersbach $10,000, of which $5000 may be suspended if he satisfies their requirements, and banned him from training with the state squad until at least October 1.Until then, Pomersbach will train under the supervision of an individual nominated by the Warriors coach Tom Moody and he would remain eligible to play for his club side Gosnells. Moody was one of several cricket identities who provided character references for Pomersbach in court, along with Adam Gilchrist, Justin Langer and Geoff Marsh.Pomersbach, who has played one Twenty20 international for Australia and appeared for Kings XI Punjab in the IPL, had been drinking on Sunday before he drove his Toyota Prado and crashed twice on his way home. He pleaded guilty to failing to stop, failing to accompany police, having a blood-alcohol level in excess of 0.08, assaulting a public officer, obstructing police and escaping legal custody.Police said Pomersbach crashed his car into the back of a parked vehicle and then drove away before crashing into a loaded rubbish skip, shunting it into a pergola attached to a house. The police then followed a trail of oil to Pomersbach’s house, where he was arrested. However, police said Pomersbach then struggled with the officers as he was being placed into the police car and pushed one officer into the window of Pomersbach’s house, breaking the window. Police said Pomersbach then ran away from the officers and was eventually tracked by a police sniffer dog and found in sand dunes.

Andy Flower has been confirmed as England’s new full-time team director of cricket after working on an interim basis during the recent tour of the West Indies

Andy Flower has been confirmed as England’s new full-time team director of cricket after working on an interim basis during the recent tour of the West Indies.Flower, 40, stepped up from his assistant role in January, following the dismissal of the former head coach, Peter Moores. Though England’s results were mixed during a turbulent 11-week tour, he impressed the selectors with his work ethic and formed a strong bond with the captain, Andrew Strauss, which was rewarded with a last-gasp victory in five-match ODI series that followed the Tests. After taking over in such uncertain circumstances Flower admitted it took him a while to decide if he wanted to apply for the full-time post. “When I went on that West Indian tour I didn’t know whether I wanted to apply for this job or not. Halfway through I had made up my mind that I did,” he said. “I’m very honoured to be given the position. I believe the last three months will stand me in good stead.”Now that he has the top job Flower has the chance to stamp his identity on the team and is looking forward to being able to plan ahead. “I was interim coach for that tour, now that I’m in charge, so to speak, things change, definitely,” he said.Flower’s salary is expected to be approximately £250,000, and his first major job will be to help select the squad for the first Test against West Indies, at Lord’s, which begins on May 6. An enlarged squad is expected to be named at the weekend.”There are some big decisions we have to make, it is a huge summer ahead of us,” Flower said. “It’s going to come up on us very quickly, some of our players are already away at the IPL, and the season starts today so there are big decisions to make and hard work to be done.”Having called upon the professional headhunting firm, Odgers Ray & Berndtson, to help pinpoint the ideal candidate for the role, the ECB were left – partly by design and partly by accident – with what Hugh Morris, the managing director of England cricket, described as “a very short shortlist”.’He’s great to work with'”He brings honesty, integrity and has a clear vision where he wants to take England. Andy did a terrific job in the West Indies. He has a strong reputation in the game and we see him as a person to take England forward.”
Hugh Morris”I enjoyed working under him in the West Indies. Since he joined the England set-up in 2007 he’s really worked on my batting and helped me develop so that’s very pleasing. As I say, he’s a top man and I look forward to working under him for many years to come.”
Stuart Broad”It’s probably just desserts. He’s done very well over the winter, as far as I’m concerned. He’s a very good batting coach. It’s the results that matter this summer. With Andy I’m sure he’ll get us rallying round.”
Graeme Swann”It’s a great appointment. He’s been part and parcel of the team for the last couple of years. All the guys have got to know him really well and everybody gets on really well with him. He’s great to work with.”
Ryan Sidebottom”If you are prepared to defy Robert Mugabe and his henchmen, telling Kevin Pietersen he can’t go home for a day or two while on tour will be kid’s play. “
Derek Pringle”Andy is an honest man who knows the game inside out and under the present system there’s no doubt he’s the right man for the job. The only remaining question is does he have a team? Unfortunately that’s out of his jurisdiction.”
David LloydMorris said that 30 people had applied for the role although many high-profile targets pulled out at various stages. “We had a great deal of interest and were very happy at the level of candidates and we believe we have the right man for the job,” Morris said. “Andy was a world-class cricketer and we believe he has the potential to become a world-class coach.”One high-profile figure, Western Australia’s coach, Tom Moody, chose not to put his name forward, while another, Kent’s coach Graham Ford, the former favourite for the role, withdrew from the nomination after criticising the long-drawn-out nature of the process.Other names mentioned but since ruled out include the coaches of South Africa and India, Mickey Arthur and Gary Kirsten, while Warwickshire’s director of cricket, Ashley Giles, was told he lacked sufficient experience, which left him frustrated. John Wright, the former India coach and now New Zealand’s high performance manager, remained as the one genuine competitor but in reality the job always seemed to be Flower’s since the end of the West Indies tour. One factor in Flower’s favour, in the short term at least, was the sheer volume of cricket faced by England’s cricketers in the coming months. After a period of intense upheaval, encompassing the loss of three captains and a coach in the space of four months (and with a fourth captain in the pipeline for the World Twenty20), the time has come for some consolidation at the top, especially with the Ashes looming in early July.It may have taken Flower until the final weeks of England’s tour to register his first victory in the role, but on his watch the team has put a greater onus on personal fitness, which will prove invaluable given that most of the squad faces a non-stop 11-week schedule in the run-up to the Ashes, starting with the IPL in South Africa for several key members, including Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen.Furthermore, Flower will also have to make a call on the readiness of the former captain, Michael Vaughan, for a return to the Test side. He quit the captaincy in August on account of a prolonged run of poor form, and he made just 12 for MCC against Durham in the season opener at Lord’s last week, but Vaughan’s reputation in Ashes cricket could well count in his favour, especially if doubts continue to linger about his competitors for the No.3 spot, Ian Bell and Owais Shah.

Gers fans unhappy with this club update

Some Glasgow Rangers fans are livid with club’s update on the potential of certain supporter health and safety requirements needed to visit matches at Ibrox this season.

The start to the new campaign has been a relatively good one for the Gers, having won five of their first seven Premiership matches (Rangers). Despite being on the losing side once, they are six points ahead of Celtic in the table (BBC), having already beaten their fierce rivals 1-0 this term.

After not being able to attend stadiums last term, fans have been able to see matches live at the grounds since the start of the season. However, from October 1st it seems, vaccine passports will be needed for those wanting to attend events of more than 10,000 people (via The Daily Record) – and this has not gone down well with the Gers supporters.

The club has confirmed they have received an update from the Scottish government, and the fans will receive further guidance on the exact regulations in due course.

The news was shared on Twitter, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the update below

“The family stand will be half empty on Sunday unless kids are exempt – which in doing so would make the whole exercise even more pointless”

“This is very discriminatory. For a virus with a give or take 96% survival rate . With a jab that is still experimental.”

“I’ve got my vaccine passport but they shouldn’t be need ….. it’s a disgrace that someone who doesn’t believe in the vaccines should be punished by not getting to see there team play .”

At a press conference Hugh Morris, managing director of England Cricket, announces that Moores has been sackedKevin Pietersen has stepped down as England captain with immediate effect and Peter Moores has been sacked as coach after a tumultuous day for English cricket. Andrew Strauss has been named captain for the tour of West Indies later this month and the ECB will begin an immediate search for a new coach. However, Pietersen denied the reports which claimed he had resigned early on Wednesday morning and it was only after discussions with the ECB during the day that he felt his hand had been forced. “I wish to make it very clear that I did not resign as captain of the England cricket team this morning,” he said in a statement. “However, in light of recent communications with the ECB, and the unfortunate media stories and speculation that have subsequently appeared, I now consider that it would be extremely difficult for me to continue in my current position with the England cricket team.”Hugh Morris, the managing director of England Cricket, read a statement at a hastily arranged press conference at The Oval. “It’s been a complicated and difficult day. The ECB late this afternoon have accepted with regret the resignation of Kevin Pietersen as England captain.”Kevin recognised that in the present situation it was impossible to restore the dressing room unity, which is vital, if England are to win the forthcoming tour to the Caribbean, the ICC global events or regain the Ashes in the Ashes Test series.”Kevin Pietersen is highly valued as a senior and experienced player and we are delighted that he has indicated he wishes to continue to represent England in all their forthcoming international fixtures, starting in the Caribbean later this month.”The ECB were left in complete turmoil on a day of rumours, denials and high drama, following the emergency board meeting that took place on Tuesday evening to discuss the rift in the leadership of the team.In a brief statement on Wednesday afternoon, the ECB had insisted they had “no knowledge” of the departure of either Pietersen or Moores, although they admitted that Pietersen had not been prepared to tour West Indies under the current management structure.Pietersen, perhaps misjudging the mood of his employers, did not depart from his holiday in South Africa until Wednesday afternoon, by which time the 12-man board had already met, by teleconference, on Tuesday night. At that meeting, it was decided that the captain would have to pay the price for his attitude. It was felt that to accede to his demands would set a dangerous precedent for future disputes, one in which the whims of individuals would take precedence over structures. In response, it initially appeared that Pietersen had taken his future into his own hands, and handed back the role he took on from Michael Vaughan barely five months ago. At 9am GMT, Sky News reported his resignation, giving as his reasoning the fact that the ECB did not act quickly enough in responding to his demands over Moores’ future. Speaking briefly on the phone, Pietersen told the programme: “I am not in a fit state to talk.”Strauss, who captained England in 2006 when Vaughan was out of the team with injury, was the hot favourite to lead them on the tour of West Indies, which begins in exactly a fortnight’s time. His reappointment, two-and-a-half years after he was overlooked for the Ashes tour in favour of Andrew Flintoff, represents a remarkable turnaround for a player who, this time last year, was dropped from the Test side following a prolonged run of poor form.”Andrew Strauss has agreed to lead the team to the Caribbean,” Morris said. “He led the England team with distinction in 2006 when Michael Vaughan was injured.”Meanwhile, Moores’ departure comes as less of a surprise. His position became untenable following the revelations of the rift, and there had been little evidence of progress under his tenure and his credibility had been damaged beyond repair.”With regard to Peter Moores, the board determined that he should relinquish his role as England team director,” Morris added. “I have the greatest respect for the dignity which Peter Moores has shown in recent days when he has found himself under extreme pressure. The ECB wish him well in his future roles.”Cricinfo understands that Andy Flower, Moores’ assistant coach, was offered the interim role for the West Indies tour, although Morris said an announcement on the coaching set-up would be made in the coming days.Speaking to the News of the World earlier in the week, Pietersen said: “This situation is not healthy, we have to make sure it is settled as soon as possible and certainly before we fly off to the West Indies. Everybody has to have the same aims and pull in the same direction for the good of the England team.”Research conducted by Morris, however, suggested that Pietersen did not have the steadfast support of his team-mates or the back-room staff. The majority of the England support staff are understood to be supportive of Moores while most of the players are underwhelmed by Pietersen’s dramatic intervention, as Steve Harmison demonstrated with his ambivalent comments on Tuesday. There was also some sympathy towards Moores who, it is understood, was given the authority to select the England captain when Paul Collingwood and Vaughan resigned, and there are those within the set-up who feel that Pietersen had betrayed the coach’s trust.Attitudes towards Pietersen appeared to have hardened at board level. While few are completely convinced by Moores, they did not like the manner in which the captain has attempted to dictate events. As one board member told Cricinfo: “People who want to keep their jobs don’t issue ultimatums.”The news brings to an end a tumultuous five-month reign. When Pietersen took on the role in August 2008 following Vaughan’s resignation, he immediately declared that he intended to do the job “his way”. With a maiden Test triumph over South Africa, followed by a 4-0 victory in the ODIs, his way was the high way during a heady honeymoon period. But then came England’s disastrous showing in Allen Stanford’s 20/20 for 20 showdown in Antigua, in which England lost the chance to win US$1 million per man for a single evening’s work when they were bowled out by the Stanford Superstars for 99. Pietersen blamed the team’s performance on off-field “nonsense”, including floodlight issues and a high-profile faux pas involving the player’s wives, but there were no such ex cuses when England were subsequently thrashed 5-0 in their one-day series against India. That tour was foreshortened after the Mumbai terrorist attacks in November, and though Pietersen earned huge credit for his role in persuading the team to rejoin the tour for the two-match Test series, and for his remarkable century at Mohali, his tactical nous came under scrutiny during their 1-0 defeat, especially after the team failed to defend 387 in the first match at Chennai. But all throughout his tenure, rumours of his dissatisfaction with Moores’ methods were never far from the surface. Pietersen did not accept the job until he had had “clear the air” talks with Moores in the aftermath of Vaughan’s resignation, and he later voiced his disapproval of Moores’ dogmatic training methods that sapped the team’s energy on their tour of New Zealand in March. Matters are believed to have come to a head in the lead-up to the Mohali Test, where the relationship between Pietersen and Moores reached the point of no return.Although Kent’s coach, Graham Ford, had been touted as Moores’ probable successor, his candidature had been raised with a view to finding a man who could work alongside Pietersen. Ashley Giles is another option, although Warwickshire have warned they may not necessarily keep his job as the county’s director of cricket open, should he be asked to fulfil a role as “stop-gap” coach in the Caribbean.
