West Ham now willing to pay for En-Nesyri

According to Spanish news outlet El Desmarque, West Ham United are ‘willing’ to pay over €40 million (£34.2 million) to sign Sevilla striker Youssef En-Nesyri – with his agent now responding to all the interest.

The Lowdown: West Ham in striker search…

West Ham are on the search for a new striker as one of their main priorities for this summer, especially considering the unreliable fitness record of current frontman Michail Antonio.

The Irons had attempted to sign a new striker in January, with manager David Moyes himself confirming that bids had indeed been lodged, but West Ham didn’t manage to successfully land anyone.

GSB will reportedly try again to sign a new striker this window, though, with names like Adam Armstrong, Ivan Toney, Tammy Abraham and En-Nesyri having been previously linked (ExWHUemployee).

The Latest: West Ham ‘willing’ to pay over £34.2m for En-Nesyri…

El Desmarque have the latest when it comes to En-Nesyri, who West Ham made a bid for January.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest/” title=”West Ham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They claim that the Irons are ‘willing’ to go above £34.2 million to seal the Moroccan’s signature this summer, with the player’s agent now sending a firm message in response to rumours regarding his client.

“We don’t want to listen to any offers,” explained Anass Ouzifi, representative of En-Nesyri, to the outlet.

“There are three teams from England, but he doesn’t want to leave. We don’t want to talk about this because En-Nesyri doesn’t want to leave Sevilla, and he’s staying in Sevilla this year.”

The Verdict: Big blow for the Hammers…

En-Nesyri came as a very good alternative to fellow top level targets like Tammy Abraham, so this news comes as a mighty blow for West Ham despite their willingness to go all out.

Lauded as an ‘excellent’ striker by Spanish journalist Guillem Balague on Premier Sports, the 6 foot 3 star forward turned heads with his outstanding 18-goal haul in just 23 La Liga starts over 2020/2021 (WhoScored).

Indeed, only Michail Antonio and Jesse Lingard averaged more attempts on goal per 90 than En-Nesyri out of the entire West Ham squad last season domestically.

There’s no mistake he could have been a brilliant capture, but this message from his agent has dealt the Irons a big setback in their striker search.

Leeds make offer for Matthew Anderson

Leeds United have made an offer for Celtic starlet Matthew Anderson as Graham Smyth drops a major transfer update.

What’s the story?

The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist has now revealed that the Whites have made a bid for the 17-year-old, who they want to add to the Thorp Arch ranks this summer.

Smyth added: “The Whites’ first team recruitment will take priority, however, before attention can turn fully to what they need below the senior squad.”

One for Leeds’ future

At only 17, Anderson won’t be someone to come straight in to Marcelo Bielsa’s first team and immediately command a place in the Premier League. However, given the kind of player he has been described as, and the rave reviews he has earned, he seems destined for the top.

As per Leeds Live, Anderson is “a dynamic and attack-minded full-back who could provide a real attacking outlet on the Whites left flank for years to come. The Whites, who also hold an interest in another Hoops youngster Leo Hjelde, reportedly feel Anderson could be an invaluable addition the Thorp Arch ranks this summer.”

Blantyre Soccer Academy chief Jimmy Whelan has talked highly of the potential that the teenager has, even comparing him to an already established Premier League star. He said: “It’s fantastic for us as a club, and it’s great to see Matthew doing so well. He really is one to watch, he is the real deal, and could be like Kieran Tierney.”

While big-money signings and high-profile additions will naturally get fans excited, bringing in young talent who could end up being superstars in years to come is a strategy which can capture the imagination too.

As a young, “attack-minded” full-back, the 17-year-old Anderson is the kind of signing which will surely have Bielsa excited at the prospect of moulding him into one of the Premier League’s finest. The Leeds manager must duly be buzzing with Smyth’s latest transfer update.

Meanwhile, Bielsa can finally wave goodbye to this man…

Palmer: Difficult to see Eddie Nketiah returning to Leeds

Former Leeds United midfielder Carlton Palmer has told Football FanCast in an exclusive interview that it is difficult to imagine Eddie Nketiah returning to Elland Road this summer.

Nketiah spent the first half of the 2019/20 season at Leeds before having his loan cut short by parent club Arsenal.

The 22-year-old is now being linked with another move to the Yorkshire outfit, with Football Insider reporting that they have been offered the chance to sign him for £20m.

Palmer, however, is unsure about a potential deal given what happened during Nketiah’s last spell at Elland Road.

“I would find it difficult,” the ex-Leeds player said. “Yes, Leeds would want to re-sign him, but he’s got to weigh up his options. He’s not going to get into the Arsenal side, but he didn’t really play at Leeds.”

Indeed, it would be a bit of a strange one. If Nketiah is to leave Arsenal in this transfer window, it is probably to get more game time.

Would the English youngster get that at the Whites? He did not the first time and that is unlikely to change given the fact that Patrick Bamford has gone up another level since then.

The 27-year-old managed to score 17 goals in the Premier League season that has just gone and featured in all 38 games. He is undoubtedly the undisputed No.9 at Elland Road.

Pakistan axe Wasim for ATC final

27-Feb-2002Barely 24 hours after Allan Donald announced his retirement from Test cricket, the end of an illustrious career of another great name of the game was signalled when Pakistan selectors dropped Wasim Akram from the Asian Test Championship final against Sri Lanka. The match will be played at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium between March 6 and 10.In an another surprise decision, the selectors overlooked wrist spinner Danish Kaneria but named two finger spinners in Shoaib Malik and Saqlain Mushtaq.Danish has 32 wickets in seven Tests. But in the last two Tests, he picked up three wickets while his 25 wickets have come in three Tests against Bangladesh.”Shahid Afridi is a utility wrist spinner and can be used,” a PCB spokesman said. Interestingly, that theory was not followed until Afridi was picked for the second Test against the West Indies (after missing eight matches) in which he scored a century and picked up a few wickets.Wasim’s exclusion is the third biggest cricket news this month. Earlier, Steve Waugh was sacked as Australia’s one-day captain and on Monday Donald decided to hang in boots after hobbling off the ground in the first Test between Australia and South Africa.Wasim, who had made himself available for the match, was not in the country to hear the news of his dropping. But when the news gets to him, he would only blame his lack of form and fitness that has deserted him in the last couple of years.Wasim, the 36-year-old veteran has 414 Tests and 447 oneday wickets, missed the final Test against England in 2000 because of hamstring injury and then skipped the three-Test series against New Zealand two months later. He made a lacklustre comeback against England in England and then went wicketless in the Asian Test Championship match against Bangladesh at Multan. He made it for the tour to Bangladesh earlier this year but his trip was restricted to just 20 balls before he limped off with a hamstring injury. In the last six Tests, Wasim has captured just seven wickets which confirms the fact that the Sultan of Reverse Swing has surely past his brilliant best.It has been an amazing turn-around for Wasim who captured successive hat tricks against Sri Lanka – at Lahore and Dhaka – when the two teams clashed in the inaugural championship in 1999.The selectors retained Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Sami and also named Mohammad Zahid whose comeback to international cricket was derailed with the sad demise of his father. He had to return from Sharjah after joining the team a day later owing to delay in completion of his travel formalities. However, Pakistan captain Waqar Younis disagreed that the world had seen Wasim for the last time in Tests.”He is a great cricketer and still has (Test) cricket left in him. He has not been picked solely because he lacks fitness.”It’s a one-off Test against Sri Lanka but I am sure if Wasim regains complete fitness and form, he would be back for the series against New Zealand,” Waqar said.Waqar hoped that the forthcoming domestic one-day matches would help Wasim regain the lost magical touch.Waqar further said the management has not decided to play Wasim in selected matches. “If he is fit, he will play in Tests and one-dayers.”However, the chairman of the PCB Lt Gen Tauqir Zia said Wasim was being saved for next year’s World Cup starting Feb 9. Pakistan play opener against Australia at Johannesburg on Feb 11.”We are saving him for the World Cup. A lot of cricket has to be played upto the World Cup but we will include him in crunch and selective matches,” he said. The PCB chairman added that Wasim’s Test career was far from over. The chairman of selectors, Wasim Bari was unavailable for comments.Squad:Taufiq Umer, Shahid Afridi, Younis Khan, Inzamam-ul-Haq (vice captain), Yousuf Youhana, Abdur Razzaq, Rashid Latif (wicketkeeper), Waqar Younis, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Sami, Saqlain Mushtaq, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Zahid and Faisal Iqbal.Meanwhile Australian Daryl Harper has been appointed ICC umpire for the Asian Test Championship final between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.Zimbabwe’s Justice Ahmad Ebrahim has been named match referee. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will appoint the second umpire as well as the television umpire.

Let's Not Lose Walsh

Two former West Indies cricket greats, Sir Garry Sobers and CliveLloyd, are hoping Courtney Walsh will not be lost to West Indiescricket

25-Apr-2001Two former West Indies cricket greats, Sir Garry Sobers and CliveLloyd, are hoping Courtney Walsh will not be lost to West Indiescricket.Lloyd, who was West Indies captain when Walsh made his entry into Testcricket against as a frail second-change bowler at Perth, Australia,in 1984 has hailed Walsh as a true champion.”I don’t think you’ll find another Courtney Walsh around and if I wasa young fast bowlers, I’d want to emulate him,” Lloyd said.”The West Indies Cricket Board and the Jamaica Cricket Board would dowell to use his experience.”Sir Garry suggested that the 38-year-old Walsh could be used as abowling coach to guide the crop of fast bowlers on the horizon.”A man, who has been around for so long, doing so well, must know whathe did to get such great success. There is nothing wrong with him asbowling coach – as long as he has a coaching certificate.”Walsh bowed out of international cricket in style when West Indiescompleted a 130-run triumph over South Africa in the fifth Test atSabina Park on Monday.Sir Garry said of Walsh’s career: “It’s a very great achievement. Hewas fantastic for the West Indies. I would like to congratulate him onall the achievements and wish him all the best in his new endeavours.””The young crop of fast bowlers can take from him his dedication toWest Indies and his ability to be always there, trying and giving 100per cent in difficult conditions.”In a 17-year career, Walsh captured 519 wickets from 132 Tests -including a best of seven for 37 after he moved to the top of the alltime list of bowlers a month ago – fittingly in his native Jamaica.”He has had a glorious career, he is a great cricketer and a greatperson,” Lloyd remarked.”He lasted much longer than most, he has kept himself fit and enduredmore than most fast bowlers. He is a great ambassador for the sport.”Though Walsh has officially retired from Test cricket, he confirmedthat he has been asked by West Indies captain Carl Hooper to makehimself available for the tour of Zimbabwe, starting June 17.Jack Russell, the former England wicket-keeper, with whom Walsh formeda friendship during his 14 years at Gloucestershire, described him”the greatest fast bowler Gloucestershire have ever had”.Many of Russell’s over 1 000 catches behind the stumps in first-classcricket, he owes to Walsh.”He was committed to the county through and through and I never sawhim not try his heart out,” Russell said.

Wellington handed lesson by trans-Tasman visitors

New South Wales handed Wellington a cautionary, if exemplary, lesson a week from the start of their Shell Trophy campaign when they won a scheduled 50-over day-night match by seven wickets and within 25 overs at the WestpacTrust Stadium

Steve McMorran23-Nov-2000New South Wales handed Wellington a cautionary, if exemplary, lesson a week from the start of their Shell Trophy campaign when they won a scheduled 50-over day-night match by seven wickets and within 25 overs at the WestpacTrust Stadium.Wellington coach Vaughn Johnson described as inexcusable his team’s collapse from 73-2 in the 15th over to be all out for 131 and hoped they could make good the subliminal damage to their confidence with earnest application over the next seven days. New South Wales trumped their total with only three wickets down and in 24.5 overs.Johnson named a 12-man Trophy squad immediately after the match, saying at least two players had confirmed their places in that squad with their form in Wellington’s two-day match against New South Wales on Tuesday and Wednesday. None had played their way out of selection contention with their form in the one-day which was made brief by the visitors’ easy superiority. But Johnson said he was disappointed his team had failed to compete more fully after and honest display in the two-day encounter. He refused to blame the quality of the stadium pitch, the slowness of which may have contributed to the match’s three caught and bowleds and a series of catches in front of the wicket.Johnson said Wellington had simply failed to rise to the occasion and he apologised to their supporters and to New South Wales for the insipid nature of their performance.”I just think that tonight we haven’t played very well,” Johnson said. “We still have to try to go on from here into the Trophy series in a positive frame of mind. I feel very sorry for the public and for the team after that performance. I was disappointed that after being 73-2 after 15 overs we wound up getting bowled out for 131. That was inexcusable.”Matthew Bell, who has had a chance over the past three days to ease himself into his new role as Wellington’s captain, said his team had learned a great deal from mere observation of the Australian side side Tuesday – had even put lessons quickly learned into action over the past three days.Wellington had been impressed with the manner in which, even in the longer match, New South Wales had always been busy, concentated and industrious. New South Wales’ batsmen, in keeping with the nature of all avaricious Australian batsmen, were always on the alert for the chance to turn a push into a single and a single into two.Bell said Wellington had recognised the talent of their opponents to work the ball and to keep pressure on the field and they sought to make that quality part of their own game. But Wellington were made to look a poor study with their batting performance today when their innings foundered in only 35 overs. But for Chris Nevin, who took the match to New South Wales at the top of the order and for Roger Twose who counted two sixes among his 29 runs, Wellington commited a sort of gentle, uncomplaining suicide.Nevin, who scored 83 as the best of Wellington’s batsmen in the two-day match, bolstered their innings today with 55 from 46 balls, an innings peppered with 11 boundaries and notable as a lucid expression of one-day methodology.Afer the loss of Bell to the eighth ball of the day, Nevin took Wellington through 50 in the eighth over and reached his own half century in the 14th over when Wellington were 69-2. He put on 46 for the secondwicket with Stephen Mather whose 12 was Wellington’s third-highest score.Twose scored 29 from 44 balls in a brief stand with Nevin and later as a buffer of the innings’ decline. But when Shawn Bradstreet removed Mather and Nevin during a seven over spell which allowed only 18 ruins, Wellington fell into ghastly disarray. Nevin was out in the 16th over with the total 85 and his and the next seven wickets fell, mostly at five and 10 run intervals, for the addition of 46 runs.Ne South Wales’ progress to victory would have been contemptuous if it were not simply businesslike. Opers Brett van Deinsen and Mark Higgs put on 63 for the first wicket in only eight overs and Higgs, in van Deinsen’s absence, went on to make 59 from as many balls before being dismissed eight runs from victory. He was counted Man of the Match for his effort.New South Wales passed 50 in six overs – two overs quicker than Wellington – and 100 in the 17th, three overs ahead of Wellington’s rate. But they had wickets in hand and they reached their winning target from the fifth ball of the 25th over.So complete was their victory that a match billed as a day-night encounter ended in bright sunshine and before the floodlights, switched on at the death, had any chance to become effective.

Southampton fans slam Walcott vs Liverpool

Many Southampton fans have been fuming over the performance of Theo Walcott in their 2-0 defeat at Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday night.

Sadio Mane and Thiago grabbed the goals to give Jurgen Klopp’s men all three points at Anfield, with the Saints left to rue some missed opportunities.

Walcott did not have the best of games against the Reds, as the former Arsenal man lost out on four of his duels and also failed to record a single shot on goal, dribble or cross (Sofascore).

He was subsequently taken off in the 66th minute after failing to make any real impact, recording a mere 25 touches of the ball in total and losing possession on 11 separate occasions in the match (Sofascore).

Southampton fans slam Walcott’s performance

These disgruntled Southampton fans slammed his performance on Twitter, with one supporter going as far as to claim that the 32-year-old was ‘shocking’:

Celtic: Mills stunned at Christie update

Former England defender and now pundit Danny Mills has been reacting to a recent update regarding Celtic midfielder Ryan Christie.

According to the Daily Mail, relayed by the Daily Record last weekend, the 26-year-old’s deal actually expires in January 2022.

It was thought his contract ran until next summer, but it seems as if that is not the case.

Former boss Neil Lennon admitted Christie was open to a new challenge at some stage, with the report suggesting he could use this summer’s European Championships as a chance to impress other clubs ahead of a potential Celtic Park exit.

Mills, 43, talking to Football Insider, shared his surprise when asked about the recent news coming out of Parkhead regarding Christie, labelling it as ‘bizarre’.

“I don’t understand that.

“Normally, contracts run from the 1st of July to the 30th of June and that’s every single football contract I’ve ever seen. Unless it’s a short-term deal or a loan.

“I didn’t think that was allowed, in all honesty.

Mills added:

“It’s a bizarre situation. I’ve never heard of that before and I didn’t think it would be allowed.

“All Football League contracts all run 1st of July to 30th of June as standard and that’s how it’s always been.

“I’m not sure who’s done that deal whether it’s a stroke of genius or they’ve just put the wrong date in.”

Transfer Tavern take

We’re with Mills as far as the shock factor of the news, and we feel it could impact new CEO Dominic McKay over the coming months, who is going to be faced with numerous tough decisions while rebuilding a stagnant squad.

Should Christie refuse to discuss a new deal, McKay and Celtic may be placed in an awkward situation.

The midfielder regularly been criticised by several supporters during the season, but he’s actually been the club’s second-best Premiership performer with a match rating average of 7.33/10, as per WhoScored.

On that basis, McKay and the rest of the Hoops hierarchy may be torn as to what to do with Christie.

They could look to sell with six months remaining on his contract, with a number of Premier League sides keen at the turn of the year, or they could look to keep him for the first half of the 2021/22 season with the risk of losing him for nothing in January 2022.

It will definitely be a situation to keep a close eye on over the summer…
