7 teams now chasing 'breakthrough' Rangers talent with contact already made

Whilst Rangers continue to close in on their first arrival of the summer, as many as seven clubs are now reportedly battling it out to deal Russell Martin his first exit blow at Ibrox.

Rangers closing in on first arrival

According to recent reports, Rangers are set to sign Josh Mulligan from Dundee in a deal which is now imminent. The young right-midfielder has undergone a medical and looks destined to become the first signing of both the 49ers and Martin era.

ByDan Emery Jun 12, 2025

As the new owners attempt to bridge the gap on Old Firm rivals and Scottish Premiership champions Celtic, Mulligan may just be the start this summer. The Gers desperately need fresh faces even after the Scottish sensation and recent transfer rumours have provided plenty of hope on that front.

49ers chairman Paraag Marathe only added to that hope with his first interview at the club too, telling Rangers’ official website: “At 49ers Enterprises, we have built a track record of sporting and business success, but our driving motivation is our deep connection to the clubs and communities we serve.

“We are excited to join Andrew and our other consortium of investors in a new era for this iconic club, and we are determined to build something that supporters can be proud of for years to come.”

Mulligan aside, Rangers have also been linked with moves for Flynn Downes, who worked with Martin at Southampton, and veteran defender Conor Coady. Both players would be excellent additions, there’s no doubting that, but whether the Gers can lure them to Ibrox will be the big question this summer.

It’s not just incomings that the 49ers have to worry about either. Following another disappointing season, Rangers could yet lose some key men and that may even include a breakthrough talent this summer.

7 clubs now chasing Igamane deal

According to Foot Mercato, as relayed by Sport Witness, as many as seven teams are now chasing a deal to sign Hamza Igamane this summer. Described as a ‘breakthrough’ talent, the 22-year-old forward enjoyed an excellent debut season at Rangers and has now attracted interest from West Ham United, Brentford, Everton, Lens, RC Strasbourg, Lille, and Stade Rennais.

To make matters worse for Rangers, out of those interested parties, Lens have reportedly taken one step further by making contact over a potential deal.

To say that he is a man in demand would be an understatement, handing the Gers an uphill battle when attempting to keep hold of their star man. Although the interest in Igamane should come as no shock, not many at Ibrox would have expected the forward to enjoy such a clinical debut season in front of goal.

Yet, after netting as many as 16 goals in his debut season fresh from Morroco, Igamane has become an unexpected star that Rangers should be desperate to keep hold of his summer.

A Rangers “hero” within the space of a year as described by scout Jacek Kulig, losing Igamane would be a frustrating way for Martin and the 49ers to commence a new era.

Mark Watt set to continue with 24-yard delivery against Australia

Scotland spinner was controversially dead-balled when deploying variation against Oman

Mark Watt, the Scotland left-arm spinner, will continue to bowl his trademark variation from 24 yards in their must-win fixture against Australia on Saturday night, despite controversially being dead-balled when doing so against Oman last week.Watt regularly bowls from behind the bowling crease to throw batters off: “It’s just trying to rush [the batters],” he has explained. “By the time I’ve let it go, the batsman looks up and the ball’s halfway down the wicket.” It has brought him plenty of success, most notably accounting for all three of his wickets in a win over West Indies at the 2022 T20 World Cup.But during Scotland’s seven-wicket win against Oman on Sunday, umpire Chris Brown twice called “dead ball” when Watt bowled his 24-yarder, with batter Khalid Kail backing away on both occasions. The second of those two balls hit the top of middle stump, with Watt and captain Richie Berrington both asking umpire Brown for clarification.

Watt suggested that Kail had been “a bit sneaky” in backing away, a view shared by Tom Moody on the ICC’s commentary. “The batter’s looking up. He’s ready. To me, that is a legitimate ball,” Moody said. “The ball is live. As soon as the batter has placed his bat down and faces up, looks up to the bowler, he’s ready to go.”There was some confusion in the Scotland camp as to why Watt had been dead-balled. “He does it a lot, and he’s taken a lot of wickets with it,” Michael Leask, the allrounder, said on Friday. “I think they might have given the batter one warning, but they perceived that he wasn’t looking, [when] the video showed that he clearly was looking.”There has been some conjecture about whether it should be legal for Watt to bowl from behind where the bowler’s end umpire is standing, with the ICC and MCC’s interpretations understood to differ slightly. In any case, both balls that were called dead against Oman were delivered from in front of umpire Brown.Leask said that Watt would not be deterred by the decision to dead-ball him: “He will be doing it again. I can guarantee he will bowl more than one against Australia. It’s almost the element of surprise… It’s also how good he is at holding his length. It still spins, it’s just that fraction longer. Man, it’s horrible to face, even for us in the nets. You know it’s coming, every two minutes.”Australia have never faced Scotland in a T20 international but are alert to Watt’s variations, with vice-captain Matthew Wade revealing he had seen footage of it while scrolling on Instagram Reels. “It’s clever bowling,” Wade said. “A lot of players are looking to get a little bit of an advantage and to sneak up and bowl a ball from near behind the umpire is clever. I’ve just got to make sure I don’t pull away when he does it this time.”Related

Wade escapes fine after argument with umpire in win over England

Jones: 'If Warner opens the bowling it'd be pretty funny'

Wade was reprimanded after Australia’s win over England following an argument with umpire Nitin Menon over a similar incident, when Wade felt a ball should have been called dead after he backed away. “I mean, I’ve played international cricket for 15 years and I’m learning the rules as we go,” he said.”I don’t actually even know the rule: once you take stance and face up, are you saying that you’re ready [for the bowler] to bowl? I actually have no idea of the rule. I think it’s just got to be common sense at some stages. I’m sure he [Watt] will pull it out tomorrow at some stage and we’ll see who’s on strike; hopefully, it’s not me.”Where previously Full-Members teams could be caught unaware by quirks of opposition players, it is now standard for analysts to send pre-match packs highlighting anything unusual, like Watt’s 24-yarder. “You’ve got to do a little bit of research before the game to see what you’re getting,” Wade said. “We’ll do that tomorrow.”Individually, we’ll go through their bowlers: whether it’s England or South Africa, we don’t really sit down as a batting unit and go through bowlers individually as a collective. We get little packs that get sent out tonight and go through their bowlers individually. I’ll have a look at them over the next 24 hours. I haven’t seen heaps and heaps of them.”England’s thumping win over Oman has put an end to speculation that Australia could collude with Scotland to win by a small enough margin to send England home on net run-rate, and Wade said that the identity of the second qualifier from Group B was “not taking up any oxygen” in team discussions: “We’re just going to go out and play the game of cricket and see what happens.”Leask suggested that Scotland are expecting England to beat Namibia on Saturday afternoon, saying: “It’s a must-win game – always has been. We knew coming into this game that it would be. We expected England to play well in the group and that’s exactly what they’ve done… It’s a hell of an opportunity for us to go and play really good cricket and take on one of the best [teams] in the world.”

£85m release clause: Wolves make first approach to sign South American gem

After kicking off their summer business with the arrival of Fer Lopez, Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly looking to splash the cash again to sign a South American gem.

What Wolves can expect from Fer Lopez

Arriving for £19m, the pressure will be on Lopez to hit the ground running in the Midlands even if he is still just 21 years old. The winger has all the tools to do exactly that, however, to follow on from an excellent La Liga campaign at Celta Vigo last time out.

According to Sky Sports’ Adam Bate, many Celta Vigo fans have been left in a rage about Lopez’s departure for they know the talent they’ve just lost.

It won’t be the first time that the 21-year-old features in English football, though. At 14 years old, Lopez played a term for Suffolk side Bacton United ’89. It was then that senior coach Ryan Owens got the chance to witness his talent first-hand.

He told Sky Sports: “He was different gravy. Just a completely different level. But he would join us for the shooting sessions and the small-sided games. He would spend the whole training session putting the ball into the top corner of the net and taking the rise out of players.”

Now seven years on, Lopez finds himself in the Midlands and looking to take English football by storm once again following the biggest move of his career so far.

The winger hasn’t shied away from talking up the opportunity to play in the Premier League either, telling Wolves’ official website: “It’s an amazing opportunity for my career to play in the Premier League, and I’m very happy.”

Signing young talent seems to be the plan for Wolves this summer too, amid rumours that they’ve now made contact to sign an impressive South American talent.

Wolves make first Breno Bidon approach

According to UOL, as relayed by Sport Witness, Wolves have now made their first approach to sign Breno Bidon from Corinthians this summer and are joined by Arsenal and Brighton in their chase to sign the midfield gem.

Breno Bidon for Corinthians.

Whilst the young Brazilian reportedly has a release clause worth as much as €100m (£85m) in his current contract, Corinthians are willing to accept a major cut-price deal worth just €15m (£13m) to sell Bidon this summer in a huge boost for Wolves.

Bidon would, of course, be the second Brazilian midfielder that Wolves have welcomed in the last year having signed Andre from Fluminense last summer. In two swift moves, Vitor Pereira could have two future Brazilian stars at his disposal as he continues to seek improvements ahead of his first full season at Wolves.

He'd be the new Alioski: Leeds very keen on signing "fun" £6m "risk-taker"

Leeds United have officially confirmed the signing of centre-back Jaka Bijol from Serie A side Udinese to bolster their defensive options in the coming days.

The Slovenia international has arrived at Elland Road after the club agreed a £19m deal with the Italian outfit to bring him over to England this summer.

Bijol will not be the last defender to walk through doors as a new arrival at Thorp Arch before the end of the summer transfer window, though, as they are also looking to bring in a new left-back.

Junior Firpo’s contract in West Yorkshire is set to expire at the end of this month, which means that the Whites need a first-choice option in that position.

Leeds eyeing deal for Ligue 1 left-back

Leeds, knowing that Firpo is on his way out of the club in the coming weeks, are actively pursuing left-back targets to come in and bolster the squad.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to LeedsLive, Lille defender Gabriel Gudmundsson is one of the left-backs being eyed up as a target for the Championship champions this summer.

The report claims that they are ‘very’ keen on a swoop for the Sweden international, but that no transfer for the left-footed ace is close at this moment in time.

It adds that Burnley and Everton are also interested in signing the 26-year-old full-back, who has one year left on his deal with Lille, which means that the Whites will have to see off Premier League competition to secure his services.

The outlet does not reveal, however, how much money it would take to sign Gudmundsson, who is valued at around £6m by Transfermarkt, this summer.

Why Leeds should sign Gabriel Gudmundsson

The Whites should push to win the race for his signature ahead of Burnley and Everton because he could arrive at Elland Road as Daniel Farke’s own Ezgjan Alioski.

Alioski

In Marcelo Bielsa’s first season in the Premier League, the Macedonia international started 29 matches and featured in 36 of the 38 league games, playing mainly as a left-back, but also as a left-midfielder.

Gudmundsson has played 74 times as a left-back and 70 times as a left-midfielder in his career to date, which suggests that he has the versatility to play a similar role in the squad to the one that Alioski did for Bielsa.

LOSC Lille's Gabriel Gudmundsson shoots against Liverpool.

The 26-year-old star, who was described as a “fun” player and a “risk-taker” by journalist Joe Donnohue, is a left-back who can provide quality in possession by driving his team up the pitch with passes and dribbles, much like Alioski was for Bielsa.

As you can see in the table above, Gudmundsson offers similar progressive qualities to what the former Whites star offered in his one season in the Premier League at Elland Road.

The Lille star, however, also won 54% of his ground duels and 57% of his aerial duels in Ligue 1, whilst Alioski won 53% of his battles on the deck and 48% of his aerial contests in that top-flight campaign.

This suggests that the Swedish gem could be even more dominant, particularly aerially, than the Macedonia international was for Bielsa in the 2020/21 season, making him a solid option for the team in the Premier League next term.

Therefore, Leeds could land Farke his own version of Alioski, who has the potential to be even better than Bielsa’s dynamic full-back, by signing Gudmundsson this summer, and that is why they must work hard to secure his services.

Axar's powerplay plan: Make it difficult for England 'without doing anything extraordinary'

On a tricky pitch in a stop-start game, he stepped up with both ball and bat to KO defending champions England

Vishal Dikshit28-Jun-20241:40

Axar: Hitting big shots, sweeps, reverse sweeps was all tough

When Axar Patel got the ball in the fourth over of England’s chase of 172, he had already been told by his captain Rohit Sharma, India’s top scorer, that the pitch was keeping low and skidding, and hitting the big shots wasn’t easy. India were already feeling confident after posting a total that had “10-15 extra” runs on a pitch difficult for batting, and Axar thought since the batters were going to attack him early on, it was best to not do anything “extraordinary” and force the batters to try and do different things, which could work in his favour. That’s exactly what happened when Axar sent down his first delivery, from around the wicket to England captain Jos Butter, who went for a reverse sweep and ended up popping the ball to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. Axar then went on to take down Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali in consecutive overs to leave England on 46 for 4 and finish with a stifling 3 for 23, which earned him the Player-of-the-Match award.”I hadn’t really planned to get a wicket on the first ball,” Axar said with a laugh at the press conference. “My mindset was to put the ball in the right areas. Obviously, when you play knockouts, you want to start and finish well with the first and last ball.Related

“The plan in the powerplay was the usual. It’s tough to bowl in the powerplay, but when you know that you are getting help from the wicket, then without thinking much, without doing anything extraordinary, I thought that the more I keep it simple, the easier it would be for me. We spoke about it in the dressing room that it’s not an easy wicket [for batting], and I knew that the batsman will charge at me. It wasn’t going to be easy to hit me down the ground and hitting off the back foot wasn’t easy either because the ball wasn’t coming on the bat nicely. My plan was to make it difficult for them, force them to think of playing some other shots, and, that’s what happened on the first ball.”I think we knew we could defend 170, it was a par score. The way the wicket was behaving, and Rohit 1:33

Dasgupta: Axar a standout performer from game one

When Axar batted at No. 8 for six balls from Chris Jordan and Jofra Archer in the death overs, he saw that they were taking the pace off, and putting the balls away wasn’t easy at all, though he struck a six off one of Jordan’s slower ones.”Obviously, I got a clue from that as to what to do and what not to,” Axar said of the mental notes he made while batting. “Giving pace would have made it easy for them. It was ideal to bowl at good areas. No one has hit me when I’ve pitched the ball at a good length. It was important to pitch the ball on a good length and line and that’s what I tried to do in the powerplay.”His first delivery, to Buttler, wasn’t particularly quick at 91.5kmh. When he bowled one slightly quicker to Bairstow at 94.5kmh, he still stuck to his accuracy by pitching it around off stump, and the ball skidded on with low bounce to knock over the off stump. His third wicket was a reward, along with some luck, after he had conceded just 11 runs in his first two overs. England were 46 for 3 after seven overs and Moeen on 8 off nine balls when he tried to clip a delivery from Axar off his pads and took off for what he thought was a single. But the ball had only deflected off his pad towards Pant, who whipped the bails off when Moeen ventured out of the crease.”It’s also about pressure,” Axar said when he was asked if the England batters got more worried facing spinners compared to other teams, “when you are chasing, and you know that the wicket is helping the bowlers in that pressure. So, as an opener, or anyone in the top four, they must be thinking of cashing in on the powerplay as much as possible. I’m guessing that’s what they were thinking, but it didn’t work out.”I think it was difficult to hit big shots as well as the sweeps and reverse sweep because some balls were keeping low on this pitch so it wasn’t easy to connect. It creates a doubt in the batsman’s mind that if he sweeps and the ball keeps low, he’ll get hit on the pad. So it depends on what line and length you bowl. Mostly our spinners kept it stump to stump so it was very difficult to execute the sweeps and reverse sweeps.”Then, the batsmen think of hitting straight as an option but we had seen videos of their batsmen that they play a lot on the back foot, but on this kind of pitch you have to come on the front foot and play your shots.”

After Pedro: Chelsea now submit £50m proposal for "generational" forward

Chelsea have now submitted a £50m proposal for a “generational” forward, who could be in line to join along with Joao Pedro, according to reporter Simon Phillips.

Pedro set for medical ahead of Stamford Bridge move

The Blues have certainly been busy in the opening stages of the summer transfer window, with a deal for Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens believed to be edging closer to completion, and the Englishman is not the only forward in line to move to Stamford Bridge.

Indeed, Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that Brighton & Hove Albion’s Joao Pedro is edging closer to a move to west London, with a deal worth over £50m being agreed on Sunday evening.

Phillips has since taken to X to praise BlueCo for the way in which they have gone about business this summer, saying: “I applaud Chelsea for the speed of the Joao Pedro deal, no messing about there. Also, this is the club backing Enzo Maresca by the way.

“He put new attackers as the priority, and the club are getting players to match his footballing vision. More will follow, far from done here.”

With bringing in new attackers of key importance to Maresca, Chelsea have now made an approach for another forward, having submitted a £50m verbal proposal over a deal for West Ham United’s Mohammed Kudus, Phillips has revealed (via The Chelsea Chronicle).

Mohammed Kudus in action for West Ham.

The proposal, which is not classed as an official offer, was knocked back by West Ham, however, with the Blues’ London rivals seemingly holding out for a higher fee, having previously valued the forward at £85m.

Despite the rejection, the Blues remain interested in signing Kudus alongside Pedro and Gittens, indicating they could return to the negotiating table with an official offer.

"Generational" Kudus could flourish at Chelsea

The Ghanaian struggled to stand out in a poor West Ham side last season, but he has proven himself in the Premier League in the past, picking up eight goals and nine assists in 33 matches during the 2023-24 campaign.

Not only that, but the 24-year-old is regarded as a “generational” talent by journalist Gary Al-Smith, indicating he could be capable of kicking on at a top club, should the Hammers be willing to sanction a departure this summer.

Fabrizio Romano: Star now set to sign new deal instead of joining Chelsea

Enzo Maresca won’t be signing him.

ByEmilio Galantini Jun 28, 2025

There may be some concerns the winger is not a necessary signing, given that fellow winger Gittens is already set to move to Stamford Bridge, but the Blues are in a healthy PSR situation, having effectively sold their women’s team to themselves.

As such, if Chelsea have cash to splash this summer, it could be worth bringing in Kudus, although the proposed £85m price tag is way too high, given that he is yet to prove himself at the very highest level.
